Both tennis teams have advanced to state tournament play and will be on the home court over the weekend. Come out to support the boys as they take on Canton at 3 p.m. today, and the girls on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. when they play the winner of the first-round Cohasset/Cape Cod Academy match.

Girls’ Tennis

In just their second year in the league, the girls’ tennis team took the Eastern Athletic Conference championship with a win over Bishop Feehan and a 15-3 overall record. At first singles, Annie Burton came back after a second-set loss to take the win 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. The girls swept every other match, with second doubles team Wendy Wen and Michaella Gaines taking an 8-6 tiebreaker win in their final set.

Earlier in the week, the girls took a 3-2 loss to Feehan, but followed it up with a 4-1 win over Somerset.

Boys’ Tennis

The boys’ team moves on to state tournament play after finishing their regular season on a high note, defeating Bishop Feehan to take the EAC conference championship for the second year in a row. They were undefeated in the league, and hold an overall record of 16-2.

The Shamrocks pushed the number one and number three singles matches to three sets, but Reid Yennie and Justice Yennie each finished off their opponents in the final with scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Kent Leonard took a 6-0, 6-3 win in the number two spot.

At number two doubles, Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer took their game after winning a second-set tiebreaker.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The girls had little time to rest between the end of their regular season and tournament play, with their first playoffs game taking place last Friday in front of a home crowd against Abington. The Vineyarders controlled the game on both ends of the field, holding their opponents to three goals in the first half while racking up 12 of their own before the midpoint whistle blew. Adding eight goals in the second half for a final score of 20-8, the girls advanced to the next round of the postseason.

The team then traveled to Hopkinton, whom they had previously competed against earlier in the month. Then ranked in the top five in the state, Hopkinton had since earned the number two seed in the tournament and proved too strong for the Vineyarders. The game ended in a 17-7 loss, despite a solid second half of play from the girls. While the loss eliminated the girls from the playoffs, coaches Betsy Dripps and Kurstin Meehan noted that the girls played a tough nonleague schedule throughout the season, and held their own.

Senior Molly Fischer, junior Madison Hughes and sophomore Alayna Hutchinson earned slots in the top 20 scorers in the MIAA. Madison had a total of 95 points, with 53 goals and 42 assists, while Molly and Alayna each had 92 points. Molly scored a total of 67 goals and 25 assists. Over half of Alayna’s points came from assists (50); she also scored 42 goals during the season.

Softball

The girls took on Cardinal Spellman in an away game Thursday (scores were unavailable at press time) in the first round of the state tournament. Their final regular-season game was last Thursday against Bishop Feehan, which ended in a 3-0 loss and gave the Vineyarders a 10-10 season record. Hailee McCarthy had six hits and four strikeouts, but the offense eked out just four hits against the strong Feehan pitching.

Track And Field

Fourteen Vineyarders traveled to North Reading on Friday to compete in the Eastern Massachusetts division four meet.

Junior Rafael Maciel will also participate in the All-State meet after running — and jumping — a 59:32 in the 400 hurdles for a fourth place finish. Rafael competed in the triple jump as well, and placed 12th with a mark of 38’4”.

In other field events, Jacob took a 10th-place finish in the long jump with a personal-best 20’2”, while Anthony in the javelin took sixth place after throwing 148’10”. Joe Turney, one of two freshmen competing for the Vineyard, placed 12th in the javelin with a 138’11”.
