A 32-year-old Holyoke man was charged with drunk driving and other motor vehicle violations after the Ford F-350 pickup truck he was driving flipped over on Seaview avenue in Oak Bluffs on Saturday night, sending six people to the hospital.

Oak Bluffs police, firefighters and ambulance responded to the scene near the end of the seawall opposite Farm Pond. Police were assisted on mutual aid by police from Edgartown and Tisbury, who helped direct traffic during a strong northeast storm with driving rain and wind. State police also assisted with the investigation, Oak Bluffs Lieut. Timothy Williamson said.

Christopher Melnik of Holyoke was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, causing serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation and speeding. He was arrested and released on $600 bail, Oak Bluffs police said in a statement yesterday. Three men in the truck, including the driver, were treated for minor injuries and released from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Three women hurt in the crash were admitted to the hospital. Two were held overnight on the Vineyard for observation and one was transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital with more serious injuries, according to police.

The accident occurred at 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

Lieutenant Williamson said weather conditions left some responders at the scene soaked to the skin with rain and salt water. “Waves were crashing over the jetty, it was high tide in a northeast wind. Two of my officers were completely soaked — it was as if they had been in the water,” the lieutenant said.

In other Oak Bluffs police news from the weekend, on Saturday a 25-year-old man was airlifted to a Boston hospital in serious condition with head injuries and a 27-year-old Taunton man was arrested for allegedly assaulting him.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday police responded to a report that a man had been “knocked out” on Healey Way downtown. When police arrived they found the victim with a bloody nose and complaining of pain to his face. The man was transported to the hospital, and investigating officer Jeff Trudel later learned that he had suffered a broken jaw, cheekbone and also had bleeding on his brain. The victim was subsequently airlifted to a Boston area hospital.

Using victim and witness descriptions of the assailant, police said they later located Jose Rodriguez Jr. at the VFW and placed him under arrest for assault and battery resulting in serious bodily injury. He was arraigned on Monday morning in Edgartown district court and held on $2,000 bail.

Police said the victim remained in intensive care in Boston yesterday.

In a separate incident, a Maine man was airlifted to Boston with serious injuries after the moped he was driving apparently crashed into a tree off Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs. Police were called to the scene of the accident at 5:43 a.m. Saturday where they found Casey Eason, 29, of St. David, Maine. Police said Mr. Eason was transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital where it was determined he should be airlifted to Boston.

The incident is under investigation.
