First it was hot, then it rained and turned really cold; now the sun is shining and hopefully the warmer weather will come with it. We have had a lot of people asking about their plants being really small and not doing well. The answer to some of the questions is that the weather has not been that warm and we have not had the sun very often. I have noticed in our garden that the tomatos and squash are starting to look much better and seem to be growing. So don’t be discouraged; just give them time.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Mano Hernandez and Jovanna Lowell-Bettencourt, who celebrated their day June 11; Ashton Bartok, Gabriella Silva-Carlos and Eleanor Hyland, June 14; Jackson Crocker and Julia Crocker and Owen Hess, June 15; and to Jackson Pizzano, who celebrates his day today, June 17.

Special wishes go out to Sandra Alestra, who celebrated her day June 13, Madeline Fisher and Janna O’Shaughnessy, who celebrated their day June 14.

Kevin Searle had his birthday June 16. We are happy to report that Kevin is home recuperating well and getting out a little. Welcome home, Kevin, and remember to listen to your doctor and don’t do too much.

Celebrate the last day of school! Flatbread Pizza will be hosting a benefit all day Tuesday, June 21 (the last day of school) to help support the Martha’s Vineyard Ecumenical Youth Group’s trip to Tennessee. The group will be traveling to Nashville, Tenn., the end of June to help in the flood recovery effort following the “1,000-Year Floods” of May, 2010. There were still 3,000 families without homes from last year when the tornadoes and flooding of 2011 began, so help is desperately needed. Please help by joining them at Flatbread Pizza, or ordering something from the take-out menu. Flatbread Pizza is generously donating a portion of all pizza sales to this effort.

Veteran Hollywood comedy writer Marty Nadler will be performing his one-man show, Very Vineyard 2011, at Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven, on Saturday, July 9 at 7 p.m. Marty’s writing/producing and performing career spans more than three decades. In television, he served as script consultant for The Odd Couple, story editor and head writer for Happy Days, contributing writer for Sesame Street and guest writer for Saturday Night Live. Recently Mr. Nadler has turned to script-doctoring feature films, working with director Garry Marshall. Marty has worked on The Other Sister, Runaway Bride, Princess Diaries 1 and 2, Raising Helen, and Valentine’s Day. Marty has just finished work on Marshall’s latest film, New Year’s Eve, due out for Christmas 2011. This MV Center for Living benefit will be Nadler’s only July appearance. Enjoy an evening of wine and cheese and comedy with the Vineyard’s beloved raconteur, Marty Nadler. The ticket is $25. For reservations, call Leslie at 508-939-9440.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum’s summer opening reception will be today — Friday, June 17 — from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The museum will debut new exhibits in the 18th century Cooke House, open up all the exhibits for free viewing, and host a reception on the lawn for members and guests. Martha’s Vineyard Capoeira will also treat guests to a demonstration to coincide with the museum’s spotlight exhibit.

Congratulations to the Class of 2011. The weather cooperated for the day, as it stopped raining an hour before the ceremony. I wish all the best of luck in the next phase of your life.

Also congratulations to the eighth grade classes that will venture to the high school in September. You also will be entering a new phase in your life and meeting new classmates.

Congratulations to the Boston Bruins, too!

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
