Halfway through a marathon Oak Bluffs selectmen’s meeting Tuesday where a ban on amplified music was under discussion, the board voted to go into an unusual executive session to discuss police union bargaining and a personnel matter.

The purpose of the private session was to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement with the police union and to discuss the “discipline or dismissal of, or complaints or charges brought against a public officer employee, staff member or individual,” board chairman Kathy Burton said, using language from the state’s open meeting law.

Police chief Erik Blake left the executive session after the police union discussion. Remaining during the discussion of the dismissal or discipline of a public official discussion were the selectmen, town administrator Michael Dutton and his assistant, Alice Butler.

After the session Ms. Burton said that the situation was unresolved and that she was unable to comment. The selectmen will reconvene on Monday at 3:30 to continue the closed-door session.

She did say that no police union contract had been finalized. The plan is to vote to ratify contract on June 28, she said.
