A Watertown man died of apparent cardiac arrest after he and a swimming companion were rescued by Edgartown emergency responders at Norton Point on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Romm was pronounced dead at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, Edgartown police said. Police, fire, rescue, ambulance and lifeguards were dispatched to two swimmers in distress at Norton Point a few minute before 2 p.m., a police press release said. When they arrived a private boat had assisted Mr. Romm and a female swimmer out of the water. Mr. Romm went into cardiac arrest and CPR was performed; he was taken out of the water at the town boat landing on Edgartown Bay Road and transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The female swimmer, who was not identified, “suffered no ill effects,” the press release said.

No more information was available at the time of the release early Saturday evening.
