Welcome July! We now have hot and humid fog, thunderstorms, and some great days for the beach. Summer is definitely under way.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Charles Fenske, who celebrated on July 2; Jonathan Watson on July 5; Jonathan “J.J.” Polleys, July 6; and Parker Ben David, July 7.

Kerry and Bobby Branca and big sister, Laila, welcomed Allie Claire Branca on June 8 at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Very happy grandparents are Betty Branca of Canton, Mike and Sandy Joyce and Ray and Annie Long, all of Edgartown. Allie also was welcomed by great-grandparents Sally Fritz of Edgartown and Gordie and Aloha Long of Oak Bluffs. Allie’s Uncle Brendan (Long) also lives here on the Island.

Well, another Fourth of July has come and gone. The parade was great! Very long and patriotic. Thanks again to Ted Morgan and his committee, who help make it a great celebration. Also thanks to the town for the fireworks display. I never go downtown, but I can see the high ones over the school, and this year they were bright and clear as the weather cooperated and kept the fog down. Hope you all had a good holiday!.

As has been our tradition for the Fourth, the Colonial Navy was in our yard for the day. My brother, Frank, is a member, therefore every year they have come to play a concert at 2 p.m. on the Colonial Inn stairs and then of course in the parade. They are served littlenecks on the half shell, and Randy Walpole’s chowder and stuffed quahogs. There is a meat platter for those who do not eat fish, and of course there is the traveling grog wagon that follows them wherever they are performing. It is sometimes a big rush, but it is always great to see everyone, as they have become good friends and we enjoy their company.

This was the first year in about 10 that most of my family was here. Besides my brother, Frank, and his wife, Linda, my niece Debbie and her gentleman, Rich, were here, plus Amanda Brown, my niece Cheryl and her children, Zack, Ali and Nath were here from Chicago. Also here was my nephew Doug, his wife, Lori, and her brother, Rob. Doug and Rob also marched with the band. It was so nice to have everyone together. The only ones missing were Kaleigh and Rianna Brown, but maybe next year they can be here also.

The Sanson family returned for another Fourth of July. Parker celebrated his 18th birthday on the Island with special guests Scot and Carmel from the West Coast. His Princeton Day School classmates Jason, Matt, Will and Nick also joined the celebration, as did Uncle Egg, Aunt Suzy, and cousins Matt and Emma. Boo and Caleb are most happy to be back on the Island. Welcome back!

Ryan Mundt was home visiting for the Fourth. He is now living in Chicago and working hard, so his Island visit was very relaxing. Besides visiting with his mom, Patty, and his father, Kurt, he had a great time with his friends and his brother, Craig, and even got to South Beach for a day.

This year’s presentation of the Walter Cronkite Award will be by his daughter, Kathy Cronkite, on Sunday, July 17, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Whaling Church in Edgartown. The occasion is free and open to the public.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
