To be homeschooled doesn’t mean one only receives teaching in the home. The family joke surrounding Kendra Mills’ education is that she was “schooled by the whole Island.”

During her middle school years, Kendra participated in the artist-in-residence program at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, studied music with Julie Schilling at the Tisbury School, and took French with Ben Sprayregen at the regional high school. She also studied Latin with tutor Amy Cohn Crawford, clothing design with Lorraine Parrish, flute with Jay Clarke, guitar with Will Luckey, and played soccre and lacrosse in the school leagues with coaches Danielle Dominic, Bobby Hayman and Phil McAndrews.

Recently, Kendra celebrated her eigth grade homeschool graduation. Friends Kaela Vecchia-Zeitz and Pearl Vercruysse were on hand to celebrate. Kendra played guitar and flute for family and friends and shared her work, including a self-portrait in clay, a skirt and blouse she had sewn, and a cherrywood armoire she designed and built. Also on display was her academic work in chemistry, physics, physiology, math, history, and English.

In the fall, Kendra will attend Credo High, an alternative, college prep high school located in California.
