“Olé,Olé, Feeling HOT HOT HOT!” That was the theme song for the weather most of this week. I am writing this during the thunderstorm, and I hope tomorrow will be a little cooler than the last few days.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Matthew Fish and Emily Gilley for July 9; Gabriella Hoxsie for July 11; Madeline Chronister, July 14; and to Thomas O’Shaughnessy, who celebrates his day today, July 15.

Special wishes go out to Megan Bettencourt, who celebrated her day July 14. A memorial service for Dorothy Barker, who died Feb. 21 at the age of 100, will be held on Sunday, July 17 at 1 p.m. at the Congregational Church in West Tisbury. Dorothy’s family looks forward to seeing her friends at the service, followed by a reception at the parish hall.

Jimmy Santos and his wife, Patty, arrived Wednesday for what has become their annual July trip back to his hometown from The Villages in Florida. Once again they are staying with his classmate, Pat Tyra, and her husband, Harold Bauld, on Shurtleff Way. Jimmy is looking forward to the Portuguese Feast this weekend, visiting friends and relatives, sharing memories with his childhood neighborhood gang (Pat, Eddie Belisle and Tommy Fisher), joining other seniors for Tuesday lunch at the Anchors, and “scratching” for quahogs down at Katama.

Pete Seeger, Odetta, and Sweet Honey in the Rock all have sung with Melanie DeMore and next week so can you! On Tuesday, July 19, at 5 p.m. at the Grange in West Tisbury and Friday, July 22, at 6 p.m. at the charter school, there will be two workshops with this dynamic singer. Participate in a workshop and you can be in the concert with Melanie on Saturday, July 23 at Union Chapel! You don’t have to read music; all you have to do is to love to sing. Proceeds go to Zambian orphans, women and disabled children. Call Marsha Winsryg for details: 508-693-4059.

The Katama Association is holding their annual business meeting and social on Sunday, July 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Farm Institute. The members of the Katama Association work with town government and Island, regional and national conservation organizations to protect Katama in perpetuity. All are welcome both year round and seasonal residents.

Pictures by Teresa Yuan will be on display from July 16 to 29 at the Old Sculpin Gallery. There will be two receptions where you can meet the artist on Sunday, July 17 and 24 from 5 to 7 p.m.

As has everyone else, we have been busy with company these past few weeks. This week we have been enjoying our visit with cousins Nancy and David Cooper, who are here from Somerset to be with their daughters, son in laws and their twin grandbabies. Grant and Olivia Kujan are on their first visit to the Vineyard with their parents, Mike and Lynn Kujan, from Finksburg, Md. They have been all around the Island and have had lots of beach time. This is the first time for Ralph and me to meet the twins and we are enjoying all the time we can get with them.

Also here are Jenny and Nelson Furtado, Lynn’s sister and brother in law from Fall River. They are all enjoying time in town and visiting.

Mike and Abby Brennan, cousins to all, and Nancy and David’s niece also are here from New York with their daughters, Fiona and Micela. They are here with a huge family gathering of Mike’s family and they are staying at the Kelley House.

So we have had fun catching up with each other, trying to find parking places close to each other at State Beach, where the kids can play and meet other kids their age. But we have had a couple of dinners together and hope to get a few more before they leave on Saturday.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
