As usual, it’s been party time in my ’hood. Bill and Jan Stokes of Waterbury, Conn., and Lennie’s Loop, VH, hosted a fabulous escargot fest with their incredible side dishes last Monday night. Iole (Nonna) was invited as well as neighbor Jim Hart and his retired secretary, Barbara, originally from Greenwich, Conn., but now of Pompano Beach. Jim conducted his part of the radio program he participates in weekly from the deck on his cellphone. My mother was amazed that you didn’t have to drive to a radio studio in a major city to be “on the air.” At age 94, it was the first time Iole ever had escargot and she pronounced it delicious. Thank you, Bill and Jan.

On Tuesday, more Connecticut incoming! My cousin and godmother, Frances Graziani, and her godson and his wife, Charles and Carol Carillo, arrived from Windsor Locks. They booked at the Greenwood House and proclaimed it immaculate, beautiful and fantastic. Iole conducted a tour of the Island while I was working. That night we met for dinner at the Square Rigger and had great food and a fabulous time. I was only sorry it was Tony Rezendes’s night off because I love to see the family there. The Windsor Locks group left on Wednesday, much too short a visit to satisfy Mom and me.

Living in our hearts and minds is Fred Glodis, science teacher at Tisbury School for 33 years. His tradition also lives on in his children, most specifically, daughter Kathy Poehler, who returned with husband, Eric, to live on Island a few years back. In addition to her many talents, Kathy makes seaweed collages, and on the same day she gathers the seaweed. She learned this love of beach products walking with her dad on Island sand as a youngster, and continued her studies at Allegheny College. You may enjoy her work during regular library hours as she is now the July featured artist for Art In the Stacks. I’ll see you there.

We are all invited to the First Baptist Church at the corner of William and Spring streets for a 3 p.m. installation on Sunday, July 17, followed by a reception at the parish hall. The Rev. Ellen Tatreau will become the new minister for the First Baptist and the Community Baptist Church of Aquinnah. Come help us celebrate.

There will be a memorial service for Dorothy Barker, who died on Feb. 21 at age 100, followed by a reception for friends and family at the parish hall. The date is Sunday, July 17, the time is 3 p.m. and the location is the West Tisbury Congregational Church. Here’s to a wonderful life.

Don’t miss tomorrow night’s cabaret at Grace Church, 7:30 p.m. This always popular feature of the Performer’s Workshop is free, donations gratefully accepted. Mareda Gaither-Graves and Ian Nie have some wonderful surprises for you with the group of performers they have been training. I’ll see you there. You are all welcome to see this group on Monday, July 18, at 1:30 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs Senior Center. The gala closing performance of this multitalented crew will be on Tuesday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the West Tisbury Congregational Church. Iole and I will be front and center.

The Mansion House is offering July vacation discounts if you call within the next 48 hours. Reserve your spot by the sea at 1-800-332-4112.

Flatbread Pizza, a most popular Island restaurant, is helping raise money for our Featherstone Center for the Arts. You are all invited to the pizza shop, eat in or take out, on Tuesday, July 19, from noon to 9 p.m. A portion of all proceeds on that day will benefit Featherstone. And the pizza will delight you. Call 508-693-1137 if you want to order ahead of time.

Tomorrow is the monthly mini-book sale at our library, from 1 to 3 p.m. This benefits the children’s programs, and you can pick up some great summer reading.

The library’s program room is the location on Tuesday, July 19, at 7 p.m. of a talk on Martha’s Vineyard River Otters, presented by wildlife biologists Luanne Johnson and Liz Baldwin. Everyone is invited. In the same location, on Wednesday, July 20, Michael McCaskey will discuss The Peace Corps, Then and Now — One Volunteer’s Experiences in Ethiopia. And Betty Burton reminds us that it is not too late to sign up for the adult summer reading program at the library.

Melanie DeMore has sung with Pete Seeger, Odetta, and Sweet Honey in the Rock. Now you can sing with Melanie, too! On Tuesday, July 19 at 5 p.m. at the Grange, the program will commence. The two workshops also include Friday, July 22 at 6 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School. Finally, you all will participate in a concert at Union Chapel on Saturday, July 23. You don’t need to know how to read music to join in, you just need to love to sing. Call Marsha at 508-693-4059 for details. The program and concerts benefit Zambian orphans, women, and disabled children. Marsha always has her very big heart in the right place.

Anniversary bouquets go out to Joe and Shirley Sullivan on July 20.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Pam Alley, Courtenay Stanley and Laurel Redington-Whitaker today. Tomorrow is a party for Karen English, Joey Hamel and John Schilling. July 17 honors Christopher Leigh Clark, Daniel Van Landingham, Fred Benson, Jessica Slocum, Barbara Masters and twins Jay and Dana Bangs. July 18 belongs to Ben Araujo, Margaret Tileston and Paige Donovan. July 19 is claimed by Ken Hayes. July 20 shines on Jane Crews, Danielle Jacobs, Carly Ann Miller and Gabriela Silva. And on July 21 Brian Hurley takes the cake. Many happy returns.
