Edgartown selectmen this week cited the Harbor View Hotel for serving alcohol to a minor on the Fourth of July.

At their weekly meeting Monday selectmen discussed a report from the West Tisbury police who had pulled over a 19-year-old Connecticut man on July 4 and charged him with operating under the influence of alcohol. Police said the minor, who failed a breathalyzer test, reported he had been served at the hotel along with his passenger, and neither had been asked for proof of age.

Town administrator Pamela Dolby said the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission did not need to be notified because it was a first offense. The selectmen voted to send a letter to the hotel.

The selectmen also formally thanked four Edgartown lifeguards who assisted with the rescue of distressed swimmers at the Norton Point breach on July 2. Jane Sarno, Derek Andrade, Justine Cohen and Kurstin Meehan assisted in performing CPR and transferring one of the swimmers onto three different boats before reaching an ambulance waiting on shore. Michael Romm, 34, of Watertown, went into cardiac arrest and died soon after the rescue.

“We’re all very thankful you were on the job,” said selectman Arthur Smadbeck.

“It put your learning to practice,” said selectman Margaret Serpa. “Thank you all.”

Det. Sgt. Christopher Dolby of the Edgartown police wrote a letter of commendation to the board. ”Given the treacherous conditions that exist in this area and the difficult nature of this particular rescue, these lifeguards should be commended for their selfless lifesaving efforts,” he wrote in part.

In other business, selectmen appointed Carl Watt to the Edgartown library board of trustees. Mr. Watt will replace Ned Southworth, who resigned from the board last month.

Shellfish constable Paul Bagnall received a positive annual review.
