The fifth annual Native American Artisans’ Festival will be held at the Aquinnah Cultural Center on Saturday, July 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Jennifer Kreissberg of Ulali performing at 3 pm. For further information, please call 508-645-7900.

In case you missed the festival two weeks ago, the West Tisbury Congregational Church will have an ice cream festival tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop by and enjoy your favorite ice cream dish.

Next Friday, July 29 at 6 p.m., Dr. David Silverman will speak at the Aquinnah Cultural Center on the historic finding of a rare Bible printed in the Wampanoag language that belonged to Zachariah Howwasswee of Aquinnah. Dr. Silverman is the author of Red Brethen: The Brotherton and Stockbridge Indians and the Problem of Race in Early America as well as the author of Faith and Boundaries.

A week from Saturday, on July 30, Anne Makepeace will present her film As Nutayunean: We are Still Here, regarding the Wôpanâak Reclamation Project at the Aquinnah Cultural Center at 6 p.m. It’s a very informative film on the reclamation of the language that was almost lost.

Aquinnah summer resident Nancy Leenson Caldwell will speak on multiculturalism in contemporary France, offering a personal look behind the headlines at grassroots actions, at the Aquinnah Public Library on Tuesday, August 2 from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Nancy has been working in the intercultural field for over 25 years and living in it for over 50. She is based in Paris, consulting for international corporations, teaching as a maître deconférence at HEC and volunteering with human rights associations. She will respond to President Sarkozy’s quote that “Multiculturalism in France is a failure.” Nancy’s talk will reflect a personal journey and look behind the headlines at some of the multi-cultural actions currently taking place in France at the grassroots level. Nancy and her husband, Duncan Caldwell, enjoy their Aquinnah sojourns.

Thank you to Phil Weinstein, whose discussion of the life and works of William Faulkner on Tuesday evening was very well received as always. Members of the audience arrived from across the Vineyard to listen to Phil and his passionate discussion of the turbulence in Faulkner’s life. Thank you to Phil and his wife, Penny, for their wonderful reception and warm hospitality following the discussion.

Island Thunder will be performing this evening at the Aquinnah Shop at 6 p.m. Great music while dining and enjoying the view.

A wine and cheese reception will be held on Monday, August 15 at 5 p.m. at the Vanderhoop Homestead on Aquinnah Circle. The rain date will be August 16. There will be ample parking. The theme for the evening will be wind power and windmill development. Pros and cons will be discussed. Principal speaker/moderator will be Mark London, the executive director of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. It should be a fascinating and very informative evening for all to enjoy.

Chilmark Police Chief Brian Cioffi will be the only Vineyard participant in the Massachusetts Special Olympics’ Over the Edge event on Saturday, July 23. Brian will rappel down 22 stories of the Boston Hyatt Regency. As of Thursday morning he had received $7,148 in donations. Let us all make a donation and encourage Brian to attain a $10,000 goal. It is very easy to donate online by going to overtheedgeboston.org and sponsor edger Brian Cioffi.

Marshall Lee and his wife, Martha Vanderhoop, are enjoying the company of their nephew, Justin Stottmeister, for the summer. Justin is assisting them at Hatmarcha on the Cliffs. He is from Rockville, Md., and has enjoyed his visits to Aquinnah. Marshall and Martha have also entertained Conor O’Brien, a friend of their son, JoJo. The boys are fellow schoolmates at Newton South High School and fellow members of the track team. Conor will be heading to Tufts University in the fall. Their son, Sam, has returned to his internship in Manhattan and anticipates a visit in August.
