Chilmark is a busy place. Everyone I meet is in a hurry to be somewhere else. There are so many things to do that the vacation part of a vacation is getting lost! Just in case you aren’t totally booked for the coming week, I will include some announcements and program listings for you!

The sunny and warm weather has made the beach a big priority. Parking has been touch-and-go in some places. The weather continues to be hot and sunny and that can’t be bad, so we will keep on planning ahead and enjoying our vacations!

Congratulations to Ted Meinelt, who celebrated his 95th birthday on July 15 at a dinner party with family and friends. Cheers to you, Ted, from your many friends in Chilmark and beyond!

Christina Neumann arrived this week to join her husband, Jon, and their children, Samona and Elijah, at the Neumann family home on State Road. Christina has been in Ecuador as part of her ongoing studies and research.

The family will return to their home in Portland, Ore. after their Chilmark vacation.

Joe and Lois Muzio of Rockport are enjoying their annual Chilmark vacation.

Andy and Melissa Freed are here from West Lafayette, Ind. With their sons, Orion, and Calvin. They are visiting with Andy’s parents, Norman and Diana Freed on State Road.

Congratulations to Kristin Maloney, who celebrated her 20th anniversary of working at the Chilmark Free Public Library. She was feted at a surprise party on July 20 with food and friends. Cheers from us all, Kristin!

Tom and Barbara Rivers enjoyed a visit with their daughter, Diane, and grandson, James Anderson. The highlight of last week’s visit was when pilot grandpa, Tom, took James up in a small plane and gave him his first experience of having his hands on the controls of an airplane. It was hard to say who enjoyed the experience more!

Those of you who remember the Mooncusser coffee house that was once in Oak Bluffs back in the folk music days may want to check out the sale of original posters at the Over South antiques shop in Menemsha on July 30 and 31. These have been recently unearthed and are in good condition. Many names and groups will recall some fun times. Please call 508-645-3378 for more information.

The Chilmark Community Church reminds us that the lobster rolls continue to be sold on Tuesday evenings and that the twice-a-week flea markets continue on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Jenkinson field on North Road.

Bill and Lorraine Kirkland of Panama have arrived at their home on D.H.’s Hill for the rest of the summer.

A service will be held for Dr. Peter Teel of Menemsha at the Abel’s Hill cemetery on July 29 at 11 a.m. The family will welcome friends to a luncheon at his home in Menemsha following the service. Dr. Teel died in January. His wife, Katherine, now resides off-Island.

Friends of David Lazarus will miss him in Chilmark this year. His family reports that he is well, but will not make the journey from Urbana to Martha’s Vineyard this year.

The Elisa Brickner Annual Poetry Contest will conclude August 8. All students entering grades 6 to 12 are encouraged to submit poems in one of two categories, junior high grades six through eight and high school grades nine through twelve. An original poem of any length and style and on any subject will be welcome. The entries must be submitted to the Chilmark Public Library by 5:30 p.m. on Monday, August 8. The entries should be typed on 8 by 11 paper. Submit your poem without your name and address on it. A cover sheet must be included that has name, address and grade category on it. This allows for impartial judging. Awards will be on August 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the library. This is the 15th year for this popular contest. All winning poems of past years are available to read at the library.

Speaking of poems, I must tell you that our resident poet, John Maloney, read a very fine poem at the annual fund-raising dinner and auction for the Martha’s Vineyard Museum last week. It was entitled And the Ocean, Always the Ocean. I understand it will appear in the Gazette for your enjoyment.

Alan Dershowitz will speak at the Wednesday night program at the Chilmark library on July 27 at 5:30 p.m. His subject will be The First Amendment: From Pentagon Papers to Wiki Leaks. All are welcome at no cost and the program is sponsored by the Friends of the Chilmark Library.

The Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival is coming to Chilmark this summer. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, at the Chilmark Community Center. There will be 25 authors speaking in tents during the day. The event is free, Edgartown Books will be selling the authors books and authors will be signing their books following their discussions. The complete book festival schedule is at mvbookfestival.com.
