An 18-year-old conch crewman was revived after being pulled overboard from his boat, submerged and brought back onboard on Wednesday morning, a few miles from Lambert’s Cove Beach.

The youth was pulled underwater from the 34-foot fishing boat Helen Irene, when his leg became entangled in the warp line. He was brought back onboard “unresponsive” and was given CPR, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The call for help on the marine radio happened at 11:35 a.m.

The Coast Guard Woods Hole sent their 25-foot high speed response boat. The man was transported to Station Woods Hole and met by paramedics and transported by ambulance to Falmouth Hospital, according to the Coast Guard. Neither the name of the captain nor the crewman was released, but the boat is based in Fairhaven.

The Coast Guard reported that the man had been underwater for two minutes. “Having someone on board who knew CPR may have saved this man’s life,” said Petty Officer first class Carson Russell, the search and rescue controller at the sector. “Working at sea is inherently dangerous so having first aid training can definitely help in situations like this one,” he said.

Mariners should attend first aid courses that teach CPR and basic lifesaving techniques, the Coast Guard official said.
