A Vineyard Haven man is being held without bail on charges including rape of a child under 16 with force, following a series of incidents at his home on Saturday.

David Thrift, 29, already was under an abuse prevention order when his wife called police at about 10:45 p.m. to report that he had attacked her. Police saw a shirtless man fleeing on foot as they responded to the house and took her statement, the police report noted. The couple, their three young daughters and a 15-year-old female all had spent the day on the beach, where Mr. Thrift had been drinking, according to statements recounted in the police report. All had gone to bed when the mother was called to the teenager’s room, where she found her husband. Confronted, he assaulted his wife, according to the report.

Police took the wife, suffering severe head pain, to the hospital and began searching for Mr. Thrift.

Meanwhile Mr. Thrift returned to the house and, according to statements given to police, raped the teenager at knifepoint. Police found Mr. Thrift at his home at about 12:43 a.m. and arrested him

Police brought Mr. Thrift’s wife home from the emergency room and contacted the Department of Children and Families, whose case workers were sent to interview Mr. Thrift’s wife, nanny and daughters, according to the police report.

Mr. Thrift also was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and resisting arrest. On Monday he also was arraigned for assault and battery of his wife, violating an abuse prevention order and indecent assault and battery of a person over the age of 14.

He is next due in court on Thursday, August 4.
