In the 1966 documentary, The Endless Summer, director Bruce Brown chronicled the journey of two friends from California chasing waves across the globe. It was a seminal movie that helped fuel the rise of the burgeoning sport. Yes, surfing once was referred to as burgeoning; just a minor blip on the marketers’ radar and considered an activity for outsiders on a par with getting a tattoo. How times have changed.
Robert August was one of the young men featured in the movie. And on Thursday, August 4, from 4 to 6 p.m. he’ll be hanging out at the Boneyard Surf and Skate Shop located on Main street in Edgartown.
Mr. August has continued to surf and is an accomplished surfboard shaper. He also continues to travel the world promoting surfing and was involved in the filming of Endless Summer II made in 1994 in which two young surfers retraced Mr. August’s original journey.
