Chilmark dove into August with the confidence of a diver who knew how deep the pool was. There is so much going on that I am not so sure we all know what we are doing. There is so much to see, hear and observe have you seen the people walking their goat?

And the big buzz for those in the neighborhood of the temporary cell tower that recently arrived in town is that they can enjoy their annual mid-summer cell phone days. Thanks again to the most welcome visitors of note who will, no doubt, be arriving soon.

The Chilmark Community Church wants to remind all the August folks that they are still making lobster rolls on Tuesday evenings at the church, available from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and that the twice-a-week flea market goes on on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the field on North Road across from the historic Kaphiggon Schoolhouse.

Menemsha harbor and bight were host this week to the visiting Corinthian Yacht Club of Newport and to a chapter of the New York Yacht Club. Large and beautiful yachts of all sorts were to be seen from the jetty and beaches. It was an exciting weekend.

We send our condolences to the family and many friends of Bruce Bartels, who died in his sleep on August 2 at the family’s home in the Berkshires. The MacDowell Colony, the storied artist residency program in Peterborough, N.H., came to the Chilmark home of Steve Judge and Jim Skelton on Monday, July 25. Sally’s brother, Stephen, and his family of Chappaqua, N.Y. will be joining the rest of the family soon. One interesting bit of information that surfaced during the Moon-Cusser remembrances of last weekend was that Robert Adnopoz is the first cousin of the legendary folk singer, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, who, by the by, is turning 80 this week and celebrating by giving a concert in Yarmouth.

Elias and his grandfather filled their days constructing a structure they have named the Twist. It is a standing form made of 68 four-by-eight boards.
