Here we go, it is hurricane season and it seems at the writing of this column that Irene is posing a clear threat to New England. So we will keep our fingers crossed that she finds another path and keeps us all safe.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. I again need to get the new school listings of birthdays but hope to have it again by next column.

Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s famous poet, Lizzie Kelleher, celebrates getting a driver’s license and also her birthday on August 26. Congratulations on both.

“It never rains on my birthday” are the words that ring in my ears every August 23, and so far she has not proved to be wrong. So, special birthday wishes go to Linley Dolby, who celebrated her day August 23 — which is also anniversary day for Linley and her husband, Dave Weagle.

Ralph and I celebrated our 25th anniversary on August 16 and we had a wonderful day. The girls at Donaromas gave us a gift certificate to the Square Rigger and as usual the meal was so delicious. We received many wonderful cards and were happy to hear from our friends and relatives. The most touching gift we received was from Jan and Floyd Norton. As some of you may know, Jan is a great artist and has done many paintings of flowers, and did placemats and prints of the Whaling Church, Dr. Fisher House and Sweetened Water Farm. Well, she is now doing paintings of animals and she did one of our old dogs, Chappy and Casey, from a picture she took many years ago. It is so beautiful and we will cherish it. I know that she is going to do more paintings, so if you are interested in having a watercolor of your animal done and have a favorite picture of them, you can e-mail me and I will pass it along to her. It would be a wonderful treat to yourself and a great way to remember your animals.

Liam Welch, son of Ryan and Angela Welch, celebrated his fourth birthday at the home of his grandparents, Norman and Margaret Rankow, on August 13. The party had a pirate theme with a pirate ship his mom built and buried treasure and a piñata. A great time was had by all and there were even pirate tattoos (galore!)— Nana and Grampy Welch still had theirs at the firemen’s breakfast the next morning.

Jim and Pam Butterick are delighted to open their home once again for the fifth annual Evening of Music on the Lagoon. From 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 4, come and hear pianist John Gorman’s expertise playing classical and romantic selections, while sipping wine, enjoying appetizers and watching the sunset over the Lagoon on this final Sunday before Labor Day.

Spend this lovely evening at 359 Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs and your tax-deductible donation will directly benefit the restoration and ongoing maintenance of the 1895 Hook and Hastings pipe organ at the historic Federated Church in Edgartown. For information, e-mail antispung@aol.com.

Jim and Mary Ellen Kresel had a house full this past week. Mary Ellen wrote:

“We had a wonderful time with the family together. We spent many hours on the beach, swimming and even jumping off the bridge. Clare Brauch was able to join us for a few days to get some of the Vineyard sunshine. Ben and Ari, our grandsons, wanted to go clamming with Uncle Josh. Even on the rainy day they enjoyed a six-hour game of Star Wars Monopoly with dad, Jonathan.

“The Kadens treated us to a delicious meal at Sharky’s. Jonathan and Courtney Kresel along with their pups, Kaya and Remy, came to spend some time with Bella.

“We finished the visit last night with a ‘Vineyard’ dinner. We had clams (thanks to Ben and Ari), oysters, lobster and fresh corn from Morning Glory, as well as tomatoes, carrots and basil from Josh’s garden. For dessert we enjoyed Sweet E’s Cupcakes. You can’t end a Vineyard vacation any better than that!”

Congratulations to Melanie Krauss, who was on the dean’s list at Bridgewater State University for the second semester of the 2010-2011 school year.

If we have the hurricane, stay safe and remember to check on your senior neighbors. They may just like a phone call to know someone is there.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
