Six boats were destroyed and four heavily damaged in an early morning fire at a storage facility at the airport business park, the owner of the Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard confirmed on Friday.

Shipyard owner Philip Hale Jr. said he received a call just before 4 a.m. Friday and went to the facility he uses for storage at the airport where one Edgartown firefighter was already on the scene. Mr. Hale said the fire truck from the Martha’s Vineyard Airport was first on the scene and used foam and water to quickly contain the fire. Firefighters from Edgartown and Oak Bluffs also responded.

Mr. Hale said there were about 25 boats stored at the facility at the time. He praised the work of volunteer firefighters and emergency responders. “Everybody has been fantastic — communications center, police, firefighters. Everybody has been professional, organized and unbelievably great, and that’s what the Island is all about,” he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Mr. Hale said.
