The tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks occurs this Sunday and there will be a number of services of remembrance to mark the day. The American Legion along with the Tisbury Fire Department will be holding a ceremony at Five Corners marking the times each tower of the World Trade Center was hit.

The ceremony takes place outside the Post Office at Five Corners in Tisbury. American Legion commander Ed Colligan worked with the Tisbury Fire Department to plan the event. After a prayer, the fire truck bell will ring ten times at 8:46 a.m. to mark the first tower being hit. This is to be followed by a short ceremony with Eagle Scout candidate Jessie Thomas reading a narrative of that day’s events. The bell will ring again at 9:03 a.m. to mark the second crash, after which James Joyce performs Amazing Grace on his bagpipes and Legionnaire Edson Rogers plays God Bless America on his bugle. All Island first responders are invited to attend.

“We should do something,” Mr. Colligan said of the anniversary. “You just can’t forget it.”

Island churches are holding their own services of remembrance. At 9 a.m. Rev. Ellen P. Tatreau leads a service entitled, September 11: Then and Now at the Community Baptist Church of Gay Head. She leads the same service at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven.

Rev. Alden Besse leads worship at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Oak Bluffs at 9 a.m. A service of remembrance begins at 10 a.m. at FaithMV Church in Katama. At 10:30 a.m. the Federated Church in Edgartown holds its service of remembrance.

St. Andrew’s Church in Edgartown will be open for personal prayer from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and its Service of Remembrance and Hope begins at 7 p.m.
