Goodnight Irene! Between the hurricane and the chaos of pre-Labor Day weekend and packing up Nonna to return to New York I missed you last week. Farewell to so many who have left the Island, at least for now: Iole Gardella, Chris Paffendorf, Louis Jannace, Lisa Quartiroli, Manlio and Joan Jannace, Henry and Elaine Traverso. Mareda Gaither-Graves came and left with her niece, Bristol, and her grandson, Aedan. Meanwhile, my nephew and godchild, Daniel Gardella, married Moah Sun in Brooklyn last weekend. I hear the wedding was fabulous and the reception a great party. May they live happily ever after.

Shirley Cronig Smith had Barry and Beth Abrahams visiting, along with David and Carol Cronig Abrahams. The family enjoyed the beach, cruising around the Island they love so well, and the homestead on Juniper Place. Grandson Jordan Kramer, son of Jeffrey Kramer, visited Shirley from Los Angeles. Nothing beats a family reunion, especially on Martha’s Vineyard.

Cheyenne Cormier had a wonderful birthday party for her neighborhood friends at her home on Bernard Circle on August 27. Cheyenne is now 12, and a most responsible sitter and dog walker. After a brief vacation on the Cape with her mom, Renae, and sister, Monique, the girls returned to celebrate Monique’s birthday last weekend. Monique is 10 and quite an artist. She’s a bit young for babysitting now but I can see by the care she gives her dolls that she will be a natural.

I can’t believe that the run/walk for our library is upon us this weekend. Sunday, Sept. 11 the 5K starts at 10 a.m., the half-mile fun run for kids 13 and under begins at 9:45 a.m. Register at our library at 200 Main street at 8:30 a.m. For more information, call 508-693-0833 or e-mail friendsvhlibrary@gmail.com. All preregistered runners will receive T-shirts on race day. There will be awards in male, female and age divisions. On your mark, get set, go!

Kathy Poehler is now a member of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association. There is a show at the Old Sculpin Gallery from a group of these talented artists, By the Sea. It runs tomorrow for one week. Don’t miss it.

Joan Merry’s Gossamer Gallery also has a show running with artists Paul Brissette, Kathy Poehler, Anne Howes, David Geiger, and some other of your friends and neighbors. Joan has her sculpture on sale now.

The Louisa Gould Gallery is in the middle of the last new exhibit for the summer season. It is the fourth annual abstract show, titled Rhythms and Blues. Marsha Staiger, Sondra Arkin, Roberta Gross, Laura Roosevelt, Ellyn Weiss and Jeanne Campbell have put their best work forward. I’ll see you there.

Could it really be the Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby time again? Beginning Sunday and running through Oct. 15 is our annual angler contest. The Mansion House is offering many Derby specials; call 800-322-4112 or visit mvmansionhouse.com. Oh, I remember the days when Laura Weigle Honey and I worked for the Chamber of Commerce and did the weigh-ins!

September is definitely not the start to a slow season. Richard Paradise reminds me that the world comes to Martha’s Vineyard this weekend with the annual international film festival. Call 508-696-9369 or visit online mvfilmfest.com for a list of the great movies and the exciting parties that began yesterday and continue through Sunday.

Uppermost in our minds this weekend, in spite of all the festivals, shows, parties and fun, is what happened on Sept. 11 ten years ago. Ed Colligan reports that American Legion Post 257 and the Tisbury Fire Department will hold a one-hour memorial service at Five Corners on Sunday, 9/11, at 8:30 a.m. Girl and Boy Scouts, Legionnaires, all citizens and visitors are welcome. There will be a bagpiper and a bugler. We shall never forget.

Get well wishes go out to my good buddy, Barbara St. Pierre.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Kathy Poehler today. She takes the cake. Unless you call in with your birthdays or help me find my book, that’s all I can report. Kathy Poehler was always in a class by herself, anyway. Many happy returns.
