Aquinnah voters will be asked at special town meetings on Tuesday night to restore the town’s full share of the Tri-Town Ambulance Service budget, make additional payments to the town’s medicare and social security funds and finance an independent tax collector position.

There will be two special meetings back to back, beginning at 7 p.m. The first is to take up business postponed in July after the town failed to achieve a quorum.

A quorum of 39 voters is needed.

Because moderator Michael Hebert is unable to attend, town clerk Carolyn Feltz will preside over the meetings.

The central question on the postponed three-article warrant asks voters to restore $25,900 to the ambulance budget that was cut at the annual town meeting in May. Voters will also be asked to fund the town’s portion of an affordable housing needs assessment led by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission in the amount of $1,300.

The third article asks voters to approve $300 for the planning board clerk’s wages for excess hours worked in the last fiscal year.

At the second meeting, voters will be asked to add another $20,800 toward the town’s share of the fiscal year 2012 Medicare and social security payments. Town administrator Adam Wilson said due to a miscommunication between the treasurer and town accountant, the amount was omitted from the annual town budget.

The town has had no official tax takings in the last three years, and voters will be asked to spend $14,000 to contract an independent tax collector to help catch up.

“We want to hire someone and give them six months work and see where that takes us,” Mr. Wilson said. “We’re way behind.”

Voters also will be asked to spend $2,000 to rent storage space at the airport to store town records.

And they will be asked to spend $923 to pay for unexpected police wages associated with tropical storm Irene. An article to fund an ambulance service training class for an emergency medical technician is expected to be withdrawn.
