By the middle of this week, summer came back. It was sunny and in the 70s. I have very mixed feelings about the heat in September as the cool weather is my favorite. It is easy to sleep and you can wear long sleeves or short sleeves and still be comfortable. Either way the sky has been beautiful with the puffy clouds and the very blue sky.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Megan Donovan, who celebrated her day Sept. 17; Curtis Farrell and Renato Gomes, Sept. 18; Michael Paciello, Sept. 19; Matheus Brito and Michael Magaraci, Sept. 20; Amber Medeiros and Cory Medeiros, Sept. 21; and to Aidan Nunes, who celebrated his day Sept. 22.

The derby is in full swing and dinners are getting later which does not bother me as long as there is fresh fish coming in. There were a few blues that made it home today, which is always a good thing.

Saturday, Oct. 8: the free children’s program at the Edgartown Public Library begins at 11 a.m., with books from the popular Curious George series and a crafts project.

Edgartown residents Ellie Bates, Jeanne Hewett, Dorris Housman and Ed Housman are members of the Howes House Writers Group who have read from their newly published journal at recent events at the Up-Island Council on Aging and the West Tisbury library. The Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Council has supported the publication, which highlights writing from residents of each Island town in a variety of genres: memoir, fiction, nonfiction, biography and poetry. Copies are available in the libraries and town councils on aging.

For the eighth consecutive year, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society will present the annual Manhattan Short Film Festival — where the audience gets to vote with the rest of the world on the selection of the winning film. This year the society will be screening the complete 120-minute program on two nights at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven, returning to its off-season venue Friday night, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24 both at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.) Tickets are $10 for general admission at door only, or $7 for film society members (memberships available at the theatre).

The Electronics Disposal Day is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, across from the high school. Fees are between $1 and $30. Please check the web site, mvcommunityservices.com, for more details. The site will tell you what objects to bring.

Congratulations to all the kids who fished in the Kids Derby last Sunday. I know there were a lot of parents with eyes half open, but it was worth the smile on the kids’ faces as they caught their fish.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
