The Vineyarders prevailed against slippery conditions and steady rain throughout the second half for their first win of the season Friday night, defeating Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Coyle-Cassidy 41-12. Coyle-Cassidy’s Andrew Rodriguez ran in the first touchdown in the first quarter, but the Vineyarders answered in the second with three touchdowns of their own, two coming off rushes by senior quarterback Delmont Araujo. Senior running back Ryan Fisher caught an Araujo pass for a successful two-point conversion after the second touchdown.

Araujo himself carried the ball for a second successful conversion after connecting with junior Brandon Watkins on a 55-yard pass for the third touchdown of the half, putting the Vineyarders up 22-6 going into the third quarter.

The Vineyard recovered a Coyle-Cassidy punt to start off the third, following it up with a 37-yard touchdown run by Fisher. Senior Tyler Araujo started off the fourth with a 37-yard end zone run of his own, with junior Mike Cutrer kicking for the extra point. Junior quarterback Alec Tattersall, substituted for Delmont Araujo at the start of the half and scored the final Vineyard touchdown with 8:15 left in the game.

Coyle-Cassidy eked out a touchdown drive midway through the fourth to make the score 41-12, but the Vineyard lead was too much to challenge.

The game also marked the first league win of the season for the team, which is now 1-2 overall and 1-0 in conference. The Vineyarders take on visiting Assabet Voke, a 3-0 team, tonight at 6 p.m.

Boys’ Soccer

The boys dropped a 5-3 game to visiting Nauset on Saturday, allowing the Warriors back into the game after going up 2-0 in the first half. Freshman Gabe DeOliveira scored twice for the Vineyard, while senior John Marcal contributed one goal. Junior Jacob Lawrence had one assist.

On Tuesday, the Vineyarders played Bishop Feehan to a 2-2 draw on home turf.

“It was a better game; we controlled more of the play,” said coach Damon Burke, adding that the team improves each match in terms of protecting leads.

John Marcal found the net on an assist from senior John Olivera. Junior Martín Aranzabe connected with junior Jack Roberts for Roberts’ sixth goal of the season.

The team currently leads the EAC with a 2-0-1 record. They are 3-3-1 overall, and take on Chicopee tomorrow at home at 10 a.m.

Girls’ Soccer

The girls took a rough loss in their first away game of the season on Tuesday, falling 7-0 to undefeated EAC opponent Bishop Feehan. The absence of freshman goalkeeper Mariah Duarte, injured during Saturday’s game against Scituate, was particularly noted in the first half, as the Vineyarders fell behind by six goals.

The team regrouped during halftime and allowed just one goal in the second half.

“We came away in the second half feeling better that we had managed to pull it together,” said coach Richard Bennett.

On Saturday, the girls lost 4-1 to visiting Scituate. Senior Jessie Chandler scored the lone Vineyard goal on a penalty kick.

The Vineyarders play Mashpee at home on Monday at 3 p.m., and travel to Coyle Cassidy on Thursday.

Golf

The Vineyard golfers are 6-5 on the season after dropping a close match to EAC opponent Bishop Stang Wednesday, falling 260-262. Sophomore Kat deBettencourt turned in the low score for the Vineyard with a 40.

The team took a 231-240 loss to Whitman-Hanson on Monday. Junior Mike deBettencourt shot a 35 for the Vineyard low score, while senior Chris Morris had a 36. After this past week’s series of home competitions at Farm Neck, the team travels off-Island, visiting Cape Cod Regional Tech on Monday and EAC opponent Coyle-Cassidy on Tuesday.

Field Hockey

The girls dropped a 5-0 game to Barnstable Saturday, but defeated Westport 3-1 on home turf on Tuesday.

The team plays West Bridgewater in an away match today. They return to take on league opponent Somerset on Tuesday at 3:30.

Cross-Country

The Vineyarders traveled to New Hampshire over the weekend to compete in the Manchester Invitational, taking home seventh place finishes on both the girls’ and boys’ sides.

Senior Shivonne Schofield placed first for the girls (27th of 179) with a time of 21:43. Junior Hannah Moore was 30th overall with a 21:54. Senior Eva Balboni turned in a 22:43, with sophomore Lilly Neville just behind her in 22:45. Sophomores Willoe Maynard (23:41) and Lucy Norris (24:55) and junior Shelby Ferry (25:01) rounded out the varsity squad.

On the boys’ side, junior Michael Schroeder was first (17th of 221) after running a 17:29. Junior Cooper Chapman was 27th with a time of 17:50, while classmate Kyle Joba-Woodruff finished in 18:05. Sophomore Thorpe Karabees and junior Job Deforest completed the course in 18:45 and 18:52, respectively, while sophomore Jeremy Alley-Tarter and junior Sam Oslyn ran 19:07 and 19:21.

The team defeated Bishop Stang in an EAC dual meet last Wednesday, but fell to Bishop Feehan, a team last seen dominating the Vineyard Invitational earlier this month, in an away meet on Tuesday.

They will travel to the Bay State Invitational over the weekend, and take on Coyle-Cassidy in an away meet on Wednesday.
