The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is opening its latest exhibit this weekend entitled Out of the Depths: Martha’s Vineyard Shipwrecks.

There is a members’ preview today from 5 to 7 p.m. and then it goes public on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and runs through to next August.

The exhibit explores the stories behind many ill-fated voyages through photos, paintings, and wreckage that has washed ashore. Visitors will see a large map of known Vineyard shipwrecks as well as equipment used by the Massachusetts Humane Society during rescue missions. They can also view a door from the famous passenger steamer City of Columbus, which sank off Aquinnah in 1884, and listen to oral history recordings giving personal accounts of various wrecks.

The member preview will also feature Sam Low talking about his experiences diving near the Port Hunter shipwreck as well as other notable wrecks. This event is free to members.
