Sengekontacket Pond in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs will not reopen to clamming and quahaugging on Oct. 1, Oak Bluffs shellfish biologists said on Friday. The pond will be open for family scalloping.

Oak Bluffs shellfish constable David Grunden said he learned from state fisheries managers that due to “unpredictable bacteria loads” in the pond, the state will not allow the opening as planned. State officials will meet with Island shellfish constables next week to discuss the issue and possibly allow some parts of the pond to be opened, Mr. Grunden said. The pond has been closed to shellfishing since June.

Bay scallops may be taken from the pond because the only part of the scallop that is eaten is the eye, or muscle.
