October is here and who can believe that it is Columbus Day weekend already? This is the last weekend for Dairy Queen, so it is now officially fall.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Jade Carrell, who celebrated Oct. 1, Julia Gomes, Oct. 4, Jayden Coyle and Jordan Coyle, Oct. 6, and to Taylor Blair, who celebrates today, Oct. 7.

Special anniversary wishes go out to Donnie and Hilda Mitchell, who celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 8. I hope you have a wonderful day and here’s to many more years together.

Happy wedding day wishes go out to Jennifer Rankow and Tim Klein who will be united in marriage on Oct. 8. May you have a beautiful day and many happy years together.

I was talking to Jimmy, the young man I work with, and he was talking about all the places that were closing this weekend. He was wondering what he was going to do as the Island moves into its quiet time. I like to tell people that when the summer is over, your life on the Island is what you make it. You can stay at home and relax and do projects or hobbies, or you can stay active with committees, church and social clubs, help out with the council on aging or look in the newspaper calendar section and see what is going on in all the towns. You can also catch up with friends you haven’t seen all summer because you have been so busy. The choice is yours to make.

Church World Service, an international charity group, has been sponsoring Community Responding to Overcome Poverty (CROP) walks in response to worldwide hunger for many years, helping to feed the hungry, save lives, build community, clarify vision, and deepen compassion for those in need. Here on the Vineyard, the 21st annual walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 16, beginning at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church in Vineyard Haven at 2 p.m., and progressing to Trinity United Methodist Church in the Camp Ground in Oak Bluffs, and back again. People may participate in all or some of the walk; those who choose not to walk may participate by sponsoring someone. Walkers are asked to report at 1:40 p.m. for registration. Support comes from the Island Clergy Association, representing about a dozen houses of worship, the Island Food Pantry, which will receive 25 per cent of the funds raised, the Island Committee on Hunger and local students.

A few generous Islanders have promised to donate 10 to 20 cents for every dollar raised, so $10 would become $12. In the past 20 years, $317,107 has been raised; this year’s goal is $20,000 or more. Forms and information are available from Alden Besse (508-693-3930), Philip Dietterich, or Mary-Jean Miner. The Crop Walk will be held rain or shine. Please sign on or plan to sponsor a walker!

A composting workshop cosponsored by Polly Hill Arboretum and Felix Neck Sanctuary will be held on Oct. 14 and 15. The Friday afternoon session from 4 to 5:30 p.m. will be at Polly Hill, repeated on Saturday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Felix Neck. There will be door prizes and free composting worms for the first 10 registrants at either location. The presenter is Ann McGovern with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

The 40th Annual United Methodist Church of Martha’s Vineyard Harvest Supper will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Christ Church campus (the Stone Church) in Vineyard Haven. For information call the church office at 508-693-4424.

Have a safe and nice, long weekend and have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
