Sengekontacket Pond remains closed to clamming but open to recreational bay scalloping, shellfish constables in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs confirmed yesterday. The constables said they are awaiting word this morning on the state’s latest sampling of the pond done this week. If the results are positive, the pond could be opened to shellfishing today. Both towns will post information on their Web sites as it becomes available.

Sengekontacket has been under an administrative closure to shellfishing since June. The pond was scheduled to open last Saturday, but in water tests done days before the samples were not considered clean enough.

The pond did open on Saturday for bay scalloping.

Oak Bluffs shellfish constable David Grunden said he took some heat from recreational shellfishermen who wanted to go quahaugging. “There were an awful lot of people counting on being able to go out. I met with a lot of them on Saturday and Sunday, trying to explain they couldn’t go,” Mr. Grunden said.

Edgartown shellfish constable Paul Bagnall said it was the same on his side of the pond.
