Trick-or-treaters will find their route to candy a bit more safe this Halloween, as Tisbury selectmen approved a proposal by the town police department to block off parts of William street to traffic on the night of Oct. 31.

Police chief Dan Hanavan came before the selectmen Tuesday with an offer to regulate traffic in the popular trick-or-treat zone. Entrances to William via Centre, Church and Colonial will be blocked off from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The police department plans to station an officer at the intersection of Spring and William streets to direct traffic (and allow William street residents to access their homes).

“As somebody who’s always on that street for Halloween, it’s overdue,” said selectman Jeffrey Kristal. “It’s a great idea.”

The selectmen received an update from emergency services building committee chairman Joe Tierney, who reported that landscapers had begun work on the grounds, and painters on the interior of the building . Mr. Tierney noted that the roof of the building is still not complete, but that the project is expected to reach substantial completion in two to three weeks.

A contractor’s bid of $130,000 was approved to Alpha Construction for work on renovation of the Tisbury town hall. According to town administrator John Bugbee, this stage of renovations includes sealing the building envelope and replacing clapboards on the front of the structure.

The selectmen next approved a motion to request Community Preservation Committee funds for work on the windows of the town hall. Because of the building’s historical designation, its windows cannot be replaced; they must be repaired. The board approved a request of $50,000.

Permission was granted to Julia Kidd of Vineyard Haven to place a sign bearing a positive message (message to be determined) on the Tashmoo Overlook as part of a greater Islandwide effort. The sign will be in place for two weeks.

In other business, Nevin Sayre was appointed to the dredge committee, and Douglas Asselin Jr. was appointed assistant shellfish constable until Craig Coutinho returns next spring.
