It is now the last week of October and last weekend we were wearing short sleeves and some of us were still wearing flip-flops. Now we are looking at sweatshirts and socks and shoes. So we shall see what November brings.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Nicole Freitas, who celebrated her day Oct. 22, Jacob Pendergraft on Oct. 25 and to Gabriella Carlos, who celebrated her day Oct. 27.

This year Carol Fligor is excited as her birthday falls on 11-1-11. She has always enjoyed her day as it is the same day as her mother, Catherine Chirgwin’s birthday. This year Catherine would have turned 101.

Happy birthday Carol and here is to many more.

Nearly 180 guests celebrated fall with Edgartown School students Jake and Marji Pendergraft last Saturday at their home. Parents Scott and Danielle invited the entire third and fifth grades, families, and teachers to carve pumpkins and enjoy caramel apples, popcorn balls, cider and gumbo (which was flown in from Texas for the occasion). Amidst hay bales, cornstalks and lots of pumpkins, guests tapped their feet to the sounds of the Flying Elbows fiddle band throughout the night, and at one point joined in singing happy birthday to Jake, whose special day was on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School Scarecrow Festival is in full swing! There is a record number of businesses this year: 67. A list of all the scarecrow locations is on the charter school Web site: mvpcs.org

Scarecrows will come down on Tuesday, Nov. 1, but many builders will be bringing them to the porch of the Mansion House for an additional group display until the following Sunday.

I went through our downtown and I was happy to see all of the scarecrows in front of all the stores and banks. The one at the Edgartown Seafood still gets me every time I drive by. They are fun and it is great to see the talent in our Island children.

The Edgartown Council on Aging will have a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 at 4 p.m. in the Fred B. Morgan Jr. meeting room at Edgartown town hall. The purpose of the meeting is to take comments regarding the proposal to relocate the Edgartown Council on Aging to the Carnegie Library Building. Those not attending this meeting may submit comments in writing to the Edgartown Council on Aging or by e-mail, addressed to pmohair@edgartown-ma.us. Deadline for comments is 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The museum is kicking off its shipwrecks lecture series in honor of the newest exhibition, Out of the Depths: Martha’s Vineyard Shipwrecks. On Nov. 3, Mark C. Wilkins will be in the museum library discussing his book, Cape Cod’s Oldest Shipwreck: The Desperate Crossing of the Sparrow-Hawk. The library is located at 59 School street, Edgartown. Admission is $8 for members and $12 for nonmembers. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Mark C. Wilkins is the director and curator of the Atwood House Museum, home of the Chatham Historical Society on Cape Cod. He was formerly the director and curator of the Cape Cod Maritime Museum and has also worked for the Smithsonian Institution. Mr. Wilkins has spent many years researching vessels for which little or no conclusive evidence exists. He uses comparative analyses with vessels of similar periods and configuration as a guide to reconstructing the vessel in question. After collected wreckage from the Sparrow-Hawk was put on display in Boston, Mr. Wilkins used this process on the vessel and published it in his latest book.

Don’t forget to beware of the goblins and witches that will be around on Monday.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
