The American Dream can conjure up many images. Something to aspire to, something that excludes, something that is as prevalent as ever or something outdated and no longer even available to anyone. In any case, it is a particular American phrase and way of life and something most everyone has an opinion about. The problem arises when discussing the topic with family or friends; like anything leaning toward the political, it can get a bit too hot to handle.

This weekend, however, the Vineyard Playhouse is taking the lead and putting a humorous spin on the subject when Jimmy Tingle takes the stage on Friday and Saturday night.

Mr. Tingle and his Jimmy Tingle’s American Dream tour is both a live comedy show and a film screening. The film includes interviews with Howard Zinn, Robert Altman, Ed Schultz, Mort Sahl, Janeane Garofalo, Sean Hannity, Lewis Black, Margery Eagan, Jim Braude, Bobcat Goldthwaite, Al Franken, Robert Reich, Colin Quinn, Barry Crimmins, Jimmy’s mother, Frances, and more. The film also includes music by Willie Nelson, The Mighty,Mighty Bosstones, The Neighborhoods, and Jimmy on harmonica.

The live show includes Jimmy, of course, in the persona of a man running for president. The show may lean toward the humorous but the subject matter is serious business. After all, if you’re not dreaming then you’re not really living.

Showtimes are at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night. Tickets are $25 at the door or call 508-696-6300 or visit
