A home off the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road was completely destroyed by fire early Friday morning, Oct. 28. No one was injured, Tisbury fire chief John Schilling said.

Mr. Schilling said the call came in at 4:20 a.m. Friday for the fire at 59 Edgartown Road. When volunteer firefighters arrived, the chief said flames were coming through the roof of the house, an older single-family home set back from the road on an elevated lot heavily overgrown with vegetation. The only occupant of the house was the owner who had called in the fire, and was outside the home when firefighters arrived.

All Tisbury firefighters responded to the scene, as well as Tisbury EMS. Oak Bluffs firefighters and EMS were called in on mutual aid, first to cover the Tisbury station and later to assist at the scene of the fire.

Approximately 40 first responders were on the scene, the chief said.

Response was hampered by limited access to the house and the fact that a primary power line had burned through and fallen across the sole access point when firefighters arrived, the chief said. He said firefighters had to wait for nearly an hour until Nstar crews arrived on the scene to shut off the power.

“It would not have changed the outcome, but was another element of risk,” the chief said.

He said the house was a total loss. An investigation has begun into the cause of the fire.

Tisbury firefighters quickly quelled a small cottage fire on Hines Point on Wednesday morning. Fire chief John Schilling said there were no injuries to humans but unfortunately a pet cat died in the fire at the home owned by James and Lynn Tuck.

The cottage is next to the main house at 3 Hines Point. The fire was called in at 7:19 a.m.

Chief Schilling said there was interior damage, but that the structure remains sound.

Hines Point Road and the end of Lagoon Pond Road beyond Skiff avenue were closed for a time while the fire was put out.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
