Here we are in the beginning of November and the temperatures have been in the mid-60s. We actually had to water the plants in the nursery because they were so dry. Usually by this time the water is turned off and the hoses put away. Oh well, we will take it. Plus, we don’t have to have the heat on.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Gabriel Brito, who celebrated her day Nov. 6; Jillian Pyden, Nov. 8; Evan Donnelly, Nov. 9, and Julia Murray, who celebrated her day Nov. 10.

Please save the date of Thursday, Dec. 1, for the second annual Festival of Wreaths. The Federated Church Meetinghouse and Parish House will have on display 75 beautiful hand-decorated wreaths, which are available for silent auction with a starting bid of $45, or for sale for $45. The event runs from 6 to 9p.m. Entry to the Parish House for the auction part of the evening is $15, which includes beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Advance reservations are not required. Proceeds from this event will benefit the 1820 Sara Mayhew Parsonage. For more information, call the church secretary at 508-627-4421.

The Edgartown Library will hold a game day in the children’s room on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be something for kids of all ages, including classic board games and a Wii dancing contest.

I was talking to my friend Jan Norton recently when she said, “Oh, Herman is here.” I wondered who Herman was and she proceeded to tell me he was a seagull that has been coming to her birds’ feeding grounds for a few years. If you know Jan at all, you know that she feeds the geese and ducks every morning and afternoon at the same time. In the fall, when hunting season is on, all the geese gather at her pond for safekeeping.

Herman showed up at feeding time, but a few times in the past he missed the time, so Jan would throw his food out the door for him. Now if he is late and Jan is not around, he goes to the door and starts pecking on it until Jan goes out and feeds him. He was pecking at the door while I was talkin g with Jan. We had quite a laugh.

It is time again to thank our veterans as we celebrate theirday. Hopefully they all will be back home safe soon. Remember there are many “who gave up their tomorrows so we could have ours.”

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
