The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will honor veterans, merchant mariners and others involved in past and present military service at a Shabbat Service on Friday, Nov. 11. Jo Ann Murphy, veterans agent for Dukes County, and members of American Legion Post 257 will attend.

California lay cantor Ljuba Davis will lead the 5:30 p.m. service, which will feature the lighting of Yahrzeit (memorial) candles. Lieutenant Colonel David Berube, Wing Chaplain, 102nd Intelligence Wing, Massachusetts Air National Guard, will memorialize four chaplains and 673 men who lost their lives when the USAT Dorchester was torpedoed on Feb. 3, 1943, 100 miles from its Greenland destination. The chaplains were posthumously awarded distinguished service medals in December 1944. Participants are invited to honor individuals’ service with a favorite reading.

Non-Center members and veterans are welcome to attend the ceremony. An Oneg Shabbat with light refreshments will follow. More information is available by calling Herb Foster at 508-627-7456.
