People are walking around in short sleeves and T-shirts. If we didn’t know any better we would believe it might still be early fall. People are smiling and enjoying this bonus weather.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their birthday this past week. Big balloons go out to Marshall Davidson and Noah Smith, who celebrated their day Nov. 15, and to Kelly Cleary, Hiaggo Goncalves and Audrey McCarron, who all celebrated their day Nov. 17.

Joann Hathaway called to report that she was very excited about the birth of her great-nephew, Mason Shaw, son of her nephew, Jason, and Stephanie Shaw. Mason was born on 11-11-11, at 2:11 p.m. and weighed 7 pounds 11 ounces. Congratulations to all and may the number 11 be a special number in Mason’s life.

Jeanne Staples, a longtime member of the Federated Church, is featured in the most recent issue of More Magazine, a magazine that celebrates women of style and substance. It is the leading voice for the woman who lives in a state of constant possibility. Jeanne has been involved for many years with missions in Haiti, first with the Haiti Fish Farm and now as founder and executive director of Peacequilts. Next summer we can vote for her project and help her win $20,000 for her organization.

Nov. 25, Felix Neck is “wild about weather!” Celebrate autumn with friends and family at the 32nd annual day-after-Thanksgiving Fall Festival. Special guest Jeff DeRosa of the Mt. Washington Observatory will generate lightning with a Vandegraaff generator and share information about weather on the summit of Mt. Washington. In addition, Marla Isaac of New England Reptile and Raptor will bring her live birds of prey, giving guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with a raptor. Traditional festival activities include face painting, squash bowling, crafts, hayrides, wreath making and more! Come for lunch, enjoy music by the Flying Elbows and explore the trails at Felix Neck. Birds of prey presentations will take place at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Hayrides will take place from noon to 2:30 p.m. Admission is $3 for members, $6 for nonmembers and free for children under 3 years old.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, the Unity Club will present a poetry reading with Island poet Margaret Freydberg from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Parish House. There will be live music and refreshments. The event is open to all women, so plan to come and bring your friends!

The third West Tisbury winter farmers’ market will take place Saturday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Agricultural Hall. Participating Edgartown vendors include Morning Glory Farm, Bob Daniels of Old Town Gardens and the Farm Institute, all with plenty of winter veggies for Thanksgiving. Chesca’s will offer its wonderful sauces and marinades. Hot lunch will be available, the fireplace will be roaring and Kevin Keady and the Cattle Drivers will play live music.

Congratulations to the Edgartown Fire Department, which won the Wingfest at Sharky’s last Saturday for the third year in a row.

By the time the next column comes out we will be having turkey sandwiches and leftover pie. I wish you all a very happy day. If you are traveling, travel safely. If you are home, I hope you enjoy the day however you choose to spend it. Don’t forget your senior neighbor. Give them a call; it may make their day.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
