Flying High on Wind and Treats
Years ago, Lani Carney, known by young artists far and wide as Miss Lani, took a trip with her daughter to Puerto Rico. While strolling down the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, a balmy wind coming in off the ocean, they came upon a kite festival. It was magical. “It felt like we were borrowing a taste of the wind,” Miss Lani said.
It also made her heart feel so good, “seeing families doing something so simple, so noncommercial and so fun,” she decided to bring the festival home with her adding to it her own special touch: ice cream sundaes.
The festival is called Kites & Sundaes on Sunday, started five years ago, and flying again this Sunday, Nov. 20, at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs.
The event is complimentary, a thank you to all of the families who participate in Miss Lani’s classes, not to mention all of Featherstone’s diverse classes. Everyone is asked to bring their own kite, but the ice cream and toppings for the sundaes are provided. There will also be s’mores and a warming pit.
Word has it the wind has always been favorable for the festival too, as it should be.
