The look of the future came to Chilmark on a gray but dry day this week when a group of talented workmen erected and installed a 149-foot wind turbine on a hill in the back field of the Allen Farm. The process took the major part of a day and the amazing aerial skills of at least two men. The promise it holds enhances its presence and, with it, the sure knowledge that it will serve current needs and no doubt be replaced with newer technology in another generation or two. It is encouraging to think we can save our farms and still put a foot in our future in Chilmark. I think my favorite moment of the day was when a workman emerged from the cowling of the engine at the top of the pole, stood atop it and seemed to be making a dancer’s arm movements in the yellow sunset ... not at all, he was busy taking pictures of the vast view he had from that perch! I hope he shares them with us.

The Chilmark Community Church will begin serving soup suppers at the church at 5:30 p.m. The first supper will be on Tuesday, Nov. 29 and continue weekly until further notice. The suppers usually include side dishes brought by volunteers. Please give Pam Goff a call if you have questions. These suppers are a good opportunity for the community to keep up with each other during the quiet time of the year.

Michael and Audrey Straight are at their Chilmark home and will enjoy their holiday dinner this weekend with their many Chilmark friends and family.

Peter and Diane Kuh are in town for the annual holiday reunion of family and friends, having come from England for the festivities.

Previews of the play Stick Fly are taking place on Broadway this week. This is of note to Chilmark because the play’s author, Lydia Diamond, is a frequent visitor to Chilmark as a friend of the Wetmore-Glimcher family. She has placed the action of the play in a Vineyard setting. Karin Wetmore and Ali Kushman of Chilmark were in the first night audience and were happy to report that the play received a standing ovation. Opening night will be Dec. 8 with previews continuing until then. So if you are in New York city for the holidays you might want to check out the play.

Delores Stevens continues as artistic director and pianist with the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society. The annual concert will be at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown on Sat, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Congratulations to West Tisbury as they move forward in their fund-raising for the proposed library expansion. Contributions are welcome and the community has been responding. It is hoped that the necessary funds will be forthcoming. It is encouraging to know people still want and support libraries. Tony Horwitz, renowned author, will discuss his latest book, Midnight Rising, at a fund-raising event that will take place at the State Road Restaurant on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Please call Hunter Moorman, chair of the West Tisbury Library Foundation, Inc. for further information.

Remember to save Dec. 14 for the annual holiday party at the Chilmark library. The book sale will begin that day also in the library.

And another reminder that the Peacecraft Holiday Benefit sale will be in a new location this season. They will be open from noon to 5 p.m. from the day after Thanksgiving through Dec. 24. The location is 13 Beach Road Extension. They sell artifacts for the benefit of Haiti and other third world countries.

Cheers to all for a happy Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.
