Archery hunting for deer has been ongoing. Now it is the time for those with guns. The two-week season of deer hunting with a shotgun begins next Monday at a half hour before sunrise. To coincide with the start of the hunt, the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club is hosting its annual fun Fall Shotgun Shoot on Sunday.

The gathering of club members and friends of the club starts at 10 a.m. and continues to 4 p.m. There is an admission fee of $10; no fee for spectators. Refreshments will be served. Marksmen will participate in three events, with all shots taken from 60 yards. The club member with the highest combined score from all three events will be named 2011 Top Gun Champion.

Hunting is allowed daily, except for Sunday, from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. Hunters are required to wear bright orange.

Hunters are required to check in their deer with officials at one of three places. The Manuel F. Correllus State Forest has a deer check-in near the headquarters and it will be open for the first week of the season. Larry’s Tackle Shop in Edgartown and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) will also do check-ins.
