The West Tisbury Library Foundation, Inc. has raised more than $1 million, or approximately two-thirds of its goal, to fund a major library expansion and renovation project.

“People have given freely, not only financially, but also of their time and talents,” foundation chairman Hunter Moorman said this week. “It’s been a community-wide effort in every sense of the word.”

In July, the town of West Tisbury was awarded a $2.98 million construction grant from the state to cover approximately half of the library’s construction costs. Mr. Moorman said the foundation hopes to raise $1.5 million by the end of January 2012, and will ask the town for a $1.5 million contribution at the annual town meeting in April.

“We’ve come very far very quickly, but there’s no time to relax and celebrate. We’ve got just 10 weeks left to meet our final deadline,” said Mr. Moorman.

The foundation has planned a number of fund-raising campaigns and events in order to meet its goal. One newly announced campaign allows donors to have their names and messages inscribed into bricks in the walkway leading to the library entrance. Higher-level naming opportunities are also available.
