Deer season is still in full swing with shots heard around town from sunrise to sunset. Shotgun season runs through Dec. 10. Then it is primitive firearms for the remainder of the month. Please dress accordingly while out for your evening stroll. Many people have been noticed out walking in dark blue attire throughout the week — that is totally unsafe.

The tribal weigh-in station is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with refreshments served throughout the day for hunters. The hunters enjoyed venison stew by Kristina Hook-Leslie on Wednesday. More than 20 deer have been checked in thus far this week.

Aquinnah selectmen have called a special town meeting for next Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at the old town hall. Voters will be asked to sign a 10-year lease with Vineyard Power for a solar project at the town landfill. The solar lease is the only article on the warrant. The panels would produce enough electricity to power all the town buildings, and would be built at no cost to the town.

The NAACP of Martha’s Vineyard will host its annual holiday bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Culinary Arts Program dining room. There will be raffles, a silent auction and many vendors throughout the day to benefit the scholarship fund. For further information, please call president Laurie Perry-Henry at 508-627-8737.

The Nutcracker Gala will be performed at the high school Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. Those performing from Aquinnah will be Genevieve Hyland and her sister, Eleanor Hyland, daughters of Thad Hyland and Casandra Hyland. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $25 for priority center seating, and $50 for a family of two adults and three children.

Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard will present Handmade from the Heart on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House in Edgartown. Aquinnah artisans are encouraged to donate knitted items, painted and/or sculpted pieces, dazzling jewelry, wampum pieces, serene scene photographs and other handcrafted treasures. For more information, call Terre Young at 508-693-0189.

Featherstone Center for the Arts will host its 9th annual Holiday Gift Show from noon to 4 p.m. daily through Dec. 18. The work of many local artists will be featured for your shopping pleasure.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is still accepting donations of unwanted jewelry for the Jewelry Jingle sale on Saturday, Dec. 10. While at the museum donating your jewels, perhaps you will find a unique item in the gift shop for the holidays.

Pam Glavin spent her Thanksgiving holiday with her parents, Dr. Ralph and Alice Falcone in Paxton. She arrived back home on Sunday and has since returned to Paxton for the week.

Condolences to the family of Lyn Ottens MacEntee, who passed away this week. She was the mother and grandmother of Megan Ottens-Sargent and Anastasia Sargent.

Shaun MacPhail, Alexandra Taylor and their daughters, Olive and Violet, spent Thanksgiving in Manhattan while attending the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Needless to say, five-year-old twins Olive and Violet had a fantastic time.

Noah James Manning returned home on Sunday evening after spending the holiday with his grandparents, Bill and Joan Kistner, at their home in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Noah was accompanied on his journey by his parents, Paul and Theresa, and his Grandma June. Thanksgiving dinner with the Kistner family was shared with many at the home of his uncle and aunt, Michael and Margaret Kistner. On Friday, the family took a walk across the Mid-Hudson Railroad Bridge, which crosses the Hudson River. Less than five minutes into the walk, we met Diane Drake of Edgartown and her family. On the other side of the bridge we met Marion and Mark Ellis of West Tisbury and their family. Friday evening it was dinner at uncle Bill and cousin Bob’s restaurant, Bill & Bob’s BBQ, across the street from Vassar College. Saturday brought shopping and the Muppets movie.

Condolences to the family and many friends of Jack Scanlon, who passed away on Nov. 19. Jack was a longtime friend of the Manning family. They shared many fun times together, especially during the holidays at the home of his former coworker, Jyl Manning. Services for Jack will be held on Dec. 10 at Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will take place at New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown at 1 p.m.

Dawn Widdiss returned to her home in Framingham on Monday after spending the holiday with her mother, Gladys Widdiss, her brothers, Donald and Carl, and Amanda Holmes. Gladys enjoyed having a full house for Thanksgiving. Heath Widdiss returned to his home on Saturday evening after a visit with his grandmother, Gladys Widdiss, and his daughter, Josie Iadicicco, and her family.

Happy 23rd anniversary wishes to Marshall Lee and Martha Vanderhoop. Happy birthday wishes to John Alley, who actually was born on Dec. 3 and not on Dec. 1, as I reported in my column a week ago. This is a major milestone for John, who has been undergoing medical care at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for the past week. His wheelbarrow in the front yard is a sign that his autumn work is unfinished. He is feeling much better and he and Anna are patiently awaiting the arrival of their first grandchild within the next few weeks.

More happy birthday wishes this week to Millicent Smalley as she celebrates on Dec. 3 and shares the day with Woody Vanderhoop, Farley Glavin and Vern Welch. Jacob Vanderhoop will party on Dec. 4 and shares the day with Jane Bankoff-Popkin and Soroya Lynn Randolph. Melissa Nichols Mahoney will celebrate a major milestone on Dec. 5 and shares the day with Theodore Howes and George Szilassy. Liz Durkee will observe her special day on Dec. 6. Margie Spitz will party on Dec. 7 and shares the day with Jonathan Klaren and Anna Alley. Candace A. Nichols will celebrate on Dec. 8 and shares the day with twins Russell Smith and Robin Smith. Deborah Hancock will observe a major milestone on Dec. 9 and shares the day with Paul Henry Jeffers-Mayhew and Polly Renear.
