Chilmark is moving into the last month of this year without much weather trauma. The mild and pleasant weather stays with us and continues to make our activities routine . . . for a while. There were even people sitting on Menemsha beach over the holiday weekend. Maybe some were swimming, but I doubt it. There were lots of visitors to town and all seemed pleased to be here.

Have you noticed how all the holiday festivities seem to have been moved up on the calendar? Everything appears to be in full-swing already. This was brought to my attention when I learned my grandsons had been to see Santa ... and it was Thanksgiving week! Happily, I can report from pretty good sources that Santa won’t be in Chilmark until Dec. 21, when he will make his first stop at the Chilmark Community Center. Holiday lights are being turned on all over town. Many of the displays are very attractive and will make your evening drives more interesting.

This Sunday, Dec. 4, there will be a family photo shoot at the community center for the benefit of the Chilmark Preschool violin program. Eli Dagostino will take the photos from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $65 and all pictures will be received within the week. Lunch and warm cider will be available for purchase. More information is available by calling Emily Day at 508-645-9323.

Dave Mayhew came from Ohio to visit with his dad, Elmore Mayhew, for the holiday weekend just past. His two daughters joined him for the drive.

Chilmark artist Al Hurwitz will be showing his sketches of World War II at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Oak Bluffs on Dec. 7, in honor of Pearl Harbor day.

The first of the winter film series by the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival will take place on Saturday evening at the Chilmark Community Center, beginning with children’s films at 5 p.m. Dinner will be offered at 6:30 p.m. The adult film will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The First Congregational Church in West Tisbury will hold its annual Christmas Faire from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 10.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is inviting us all to an open house at their new building, the old Marine Hospital, and, later, the St. Pierre School, in Vineyard Haven. The museum will offer tours of the building from noon to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be provided by the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven. Some of us can remember when it was a hospital. I remember helping deliver home-cooked treats on holidays for the patients.

Best wishes from us all to Valerie Murphy, who is recovering at home from a spell of illness.

December is fine-free month at the Chilmark library. Your fines for overdue books will be forgiven in exchange for a food donation, which will go to the Vineyard Food Pantry. Donations are welcome, even if you don’t owe a fine!

The knitting ladies are meeting every Thursday evening at the library from 7 to 9 p.m. All are welcome to bring their project and come join the group. They welcome beginners and or skilled knitters. Please call Susan Murphy if you have questions.

The annual book sale to benefit the Friends of the Chilmark Library will begin on Dec. 14, the same day as the Friends invite us all to their annual holiday party at the library. All are welcome. The library is happy to welcome Layne Bazzy as their newest volunteer.

If you happen to be in Washington, D.C. this season, you can view the latest sculptures of Chilmark seasonal resident Carol Brown Goldberg, who will be displaying her work with the paintings of Wolf Kahn at the Addison Ripley Fine Art Gallery.

Chilmark has made the national news this week as the sale of the Blue Heron Farm seems to interest the news channels. Just another transaction in an improving real estate market, right? Let’s hope so.

Now, if you need a time out from all the holiday excitement, how about attending the next selectmen’s meeting on Dec. 6 at the town hall at 7:30 p.m. and get caught up on whatever the hot items concerning the town are this month?
