Here we are into the first week in December and we are still wearing shorts and sneakers. I have heard that this was not one of the warmest Novembers overall, but we did break some records.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Tiffany Freitas and Avery Simmons, who partied on Nov. 26; Kathryn Cuthbert on Nov. 27; Andrew DiMattia, James DiMattia and Malcolm Hammond on Nov. 28, and Abigail Desquenne, who celebrated her day Nov. 30.

Special wishes go out to my niece, Tina Polleys, who celebrated her day on Nov. 27.

It is December and the town is getting green — and I don’t mean Christmas green. I have had people report that their coreopsis and dandelions are blooming. There was also a report that some lilacs bloomed this month. Mother Nature is toying with us. Who knows what her next trick will be?

Christmas in Edgartown is next weekend and the trees are in, and so are the garlands and wreaths. We have been wetting them down so they don’t dry out with this warm weather. The town trees have also arrived and the lights were handed out yesterday for Cannonball Park. We have piles of wreaths and garlands ready to go out to the businesses and private citizens. I can’t wait to see them in their glory hanging around town. Of course, everyone is willing to decorate outside in this weather, so there should be some great displays.

Amy M. Bates, a 2010 graduate of Northeastern University, returned to Chicago in September after training the counselors in training at Fleur de Lis Camp for girls ages 8 to 16 in Fitzwilliam, N.H. Amy now continues her work in human services with the Peer Health Exchange, a nonprofit organization addressing health problems in today’s youth. Amy will train volunteers from Chicago colleges to teach public high school students health education.

I have been in touch with Mary Ellen and Jim Kresel, who are settling into their new lives in Florida. Their new house will be ready on Tuesday. They are happy, of course. However, Jim, who is a kidney transplant patient, has been hospitalized for retaining fluid. He is undergoing tests in Orlando. I will keep you informed as we learn more, as many of his Island friends and students ask me how they are doing. I hear his attitude is great and he is very happy with the house and their new surroundings. Keep them in your prayers for a speedy recovery.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
