Deer Week

With the numbers still incomplete, deer hunting season is turning out to be a good one this year. More than 600 deer have been taken since the season began with bow hunting last month, according to reports from the check-in stations.

The two-week shotgun season ends tomorrow. Yesterday afternoon a total of nearly 400 deer had been checked in at the various stations on the Island, including at the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest. The state forest station saw 210 deer in the first week of shotgun season. Last year the count was 124 for the first week.

The other deer check in stations are at the Wampanoag Tribe headquarters in Aquinnah and at Larry’s Tackle Shop in Edgartown.

Black powder, also called primitive firearm season, begins next Monday and continues to Dec. 31.
