On Wednesday it poured but the weather was so warm that I don’t think the heat came on at all. The weatherman said this weekend would start to be “seasonally.” I don’t know what “seasonally” is, but I have a feeling the picnic is over. It sure was great while it lasted.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Samantha Cassidy and Brendan Morris, who celebrated their day Dec. 2; Jasmyn Hershey, Dec. 3; Justin Donahue, Dec. 4; Michaela Benefit, Dec. 5; Vincent Benoit and Jerry DaSilva, Dec. 5, and to Victoria Scott, who celebrates her day Dec. 6.

Special birthday wishes go out to Paul Schultz, who celebrated his day Dec. 1.

The big weekend, Christmas in Edgartown, is here. The town is buzzing with last-minute details. The parade route is all set; the trees are all up in the town; Cannonball Park is lit up, and the garlands and red bows are hanging on all the white fences. It should be a great time for all.

Here are a couple of activities that did not make the schedule.

St. Andrew’s Church is having an open house in conjunction with Christmas in Edgartown. Stop by Saturday, Dec. 10 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. for hot chocolate and goodies.

Sharky’s in Edgartown is hosting a wine tasting on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. Kahlua, coffee and hors d’oeuvres will also be served. There is a $10 door charge, the proceeds of which benefit networkofneighbors.com, an online forum where the needs of Martha’s Vineyard neighbors are filled by neighborly acts of kindness. What could depict the holiday season better than that?

The Edgartown School will hold a holiday craft fair on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lizzie Edwards, who recently returned from serving in the Peace Corps in Oyugis, Kenya as a public health volunteer, will be selling handmade jewelry and purses/bags made by two women’s groups she worked with in Kenya. Prices range from $5 to $25, with all profits going to economically empower these women. Since Lizzie has been selling their crafts, these women have paid fees for their children to go to school, buy medicine for their families, pay off loans, and buy food, shoes and goats (for milk). Stop by and catch up with Lizzie and support her project.

The Edgartown School winter concert will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 6:30 p.m. Students in Ms. Lachapelle’s first grade and Mrs. Knight’s third grade have undertaken a number of projects to help needy families through Heifer International. Students will sell homemade snacks and popcorn at the concert at the show. They are also collecting returnable bottles and cans, and adding the return money to their coffers. They hope to raise enough to send a goat, a hive of bees and a flock of chicks to families in need.

If you are driving on the Beach road and you look across toward the Boulevard and see a strange red light, don’t be dismayed. It’s just the Santa that Phillip Leveque put on top of his house. Phillip loves to decorate for the holidays and make the kids smile; this is his new addition.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
