May I be sentenced to the last spot in standby on a 10 degree weekend for misinforming you of the name of the author of Area 51, that great nonfiction I read last week. Her name is Annie Jacobsen. Time for new reading glasses.

Congratulations to Vanessa, daughter of Woody and Phyllis Williams. Her hard work and good grades earned her a semester in London, starting in January. Vanessa is at Pace University Law School in White Plains.

I am late to join the bandwagon of people disappointed that the Tisbury School did not participate in the fourth grade theatre project this fall. How well I remember what a wonderful experience it was for my son, his classmates and many students after that. Let this be the last year we skip it.

There has been a change in the Red Stocking Fund address and information number. Send your donations to Red Stocking, P.O. Box 600, Edgartown, MA 02539. Inquiries and information are available by calling 508-693-2324 or e-mailing redstockingfund@gmail.com. Don’t feel it is too late to donate. We accept gifts all year long.

You can see Santa at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11 at our fire station. All are welcome and all is free.

However, you won’t be able to walk next door to Cumby’s and see lovely manager Liza Buckley until next year! Liza has taken a long-awaited vacation to the Philippines to visit her family and friends and go over her old stomping grounds. It won’t seem like the holidays without her. Her usual staff of friendly and helpful workers will keep your coffee coming until she returns.

Tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Martha’s Vineyard Museum will hold its annual Jewelry Jingle sale, featuring gently worn or never worn reasonably priced gifts. Proceeds benefit the museum. There will also be an authors’ talk at the Pease House Gallery, free with the purchase of a book. Some of the participating authors include Tom Hale, Cynthia Riggs and Tom Dresser.

As I foretold last week, our First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven is offering a spaghetti and meatball family-style supper at 6 p.m. tomorrow night, to be followed by the classic movie A Christmas Carol. Grownups get in for $8, kids chow down for $5. I’ll see you there.

My son and many generations of happy campers attended the St. Pierre School at 151 Lagoon Pond Road, formerly known as the Marine Hospital. That building is now set to become the new home of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. On Sunday, Dec. 11 you may attend an open house tour of the building. A community photo will be snapped at 1 p.m. The tour and refreshments provided by the Mansion House begin at 2 p.m. I can’t wait to see what has been done to this noble building! Unfortunately, as of right now, it is not yet handicapped accessible.

Our Vineyard Haven Library and the West Tisbury Library were two of 262 libraries nationwide deemed star status. This was out of a review of 7,513 libraries. And our programs keep coming: Bill Buckley has his art in the stacks for the month of December. The hit movie The Help, based on Kathryn Stockett’s book about life in Mississippi in the 1960s, will be shown free in the program room at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Anita Vivian, Jack Scanlon Jr. and Don Amaral. Three Island legends have left us.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Rachael York, Christine Honig, Joe Hegarty and Joanne Gardella today. Tomorrow is shared by Issabel Walker and Eric Claussen. Dec. 11 is a party for Renae Brown, Crystal Sylvia and twins Jackie and Carol Tileston. Dec. 12 honors Mike Holenko, Vamp Campbell, Taylor Ardeen Meadows and Samia Arado. Dec. 13 is claimed by Nancy May Hehre. Dec. 14 honors Cheyenne Cimeno. And on December 15, Emma Tobin, Merry Barclae Miaini and Tim Sylvia take the cake.
