Rev. Ellen Tatreau will be conducting the fourth Sunday in Advent service at Community Baptist Church of Gay Head on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 9 a.m. The always solemn Christmas Eve candlelight service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 24 at 5 p.m. Rev. Tatreau is also conducting a Christmas Day service at Community Baptist at 9 a.m. All are invited to attend any and all of these services.

The Aquinnah holiday party will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the town hall. Santa will arrive at 5:15 p.m. There will be a potluck dinner, so please bring a dish to share as you celebrate the season with your family, friends and neighbors.

Nonie Madison and her husband, Dan Sauer, will feature Todd Christy of Chilmark Coffee Company tomorrow at their 7a eatery from 9 a.m. to noon. Stock up on Todd’s coffee for entertaining all of your holiday guests. There are also many gift baskets and stocking stuffers at 7a for your shopping pleasure.

Tomorrow will be the final winter farmers’ market of 2011 at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. Joining in the fun of the day from Aquinnah will be Pam Glavin with Pam’s Pesto and Julianne Vanderhoop with baked goods from the Orange Peel Bakery. Mitzi Pratt will open the Bindery at 5 Moshup Trail from Dec. 21 to 24 for last-minute shoppers looking for journals or sketchbooks. Mitzi will also give you an estimate on any book restorations you may need. Stop by for a cup of cider and browse her Bindery from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 21 to 23, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 24.

In a follow-up to our Class of 1964 mini reunion, we anticipate that one of our favorite homeroom teachers, Maurice Dore, will attend our upcoming 50th reunion. We see Mr. Dore on occasion as he still resides in Edgartown.

Classmate Carol Magee, director of Vineyard Open Land Foundation, reminded us of the organic cranberries they have been growing and are now available at Tisbury Farm Market for $5 for half a pound or $10 a pound. Sundy Smith Previant reminded us of the fresh eggs and meat available at the Farm Institute, where her husband is the director.

The Aquinnah Public Library hosted its annual open house this past Saturday with lots of holiday cheer. Library director Cathy Thompson and her staff of Penny, Barbara and Rosa are working on their winter programs, which will once again include a movie night. The best news, though, is the fact that the library is once again considering joining CLAMS, which stands for Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing. This is a project that former librarian Roxanne Ackerman and I worked on together about 16 years ago, but the funding just was not available at that time. There will now be a fund-raising effort to provide for CLAMS. Friends of Aquinnah Public Library will also contribute. CLAMS will enhance the availability of materials for everyone to enjoy.

Tuesday mornings will not be the same, at least for a group of us who participate in QiQong with Nan Doty at the Chilmark Community Center. Following our morning class, we always head over to the Menemsha Café for breakfast and interesting conversations. On Tuesday, we were dismayed to find that today will be the final day of MenemshaCafé at least in its present location. Josh Aronie and his staff have provided delicious slow-cooked foods for all to enjoy for breakfast, lunch or dinner — you were never disappointed. On Tuesdays, Alex Mayhew graciously would open early to accommodate our group and our individual whims. We will miss them. Now the closest place for a cup of coffee or tea during the long winter months will be the Menemsha Texaco. That is fine as the Carrolls are always very accommodating, but for sit-down dining we will have to go to the airport. We have also learned that Menemsha Market will not be opening next summer under the management of Kevin and Elizabeth Oliver. These are major changes in the landscape of the Menemsha community.

Rep. Madden, accompanied by his assistant Nell Coogan, visited the Serving Hands Food Distribution activities on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church Parish house in Vineyard Haven. Rev. Ellen Tatreau was pleased to see a number of volunteers from her two churches assist Betty Burton in distributing food to nearly 200 families. The food is provided by the Greater Boston Food Bank and brought to the Vineyard by volunteers from the highway departments of Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Tisbury under the auspices of the Martha‘s Vineyard Center for Living. Additional foods are donated by Bob Pacheco and his family at Reliable Market and Steve Bernier of Cronig’s Market. James and Deborah Athearn of Morning Glory Farm generously donate bushels of produce. Also this week, Eric Glasgow and his family of the Grey Barn and Farm in Chilmark generously donated many bottles of fresh milk. Monetary donations provide certificates for food and may be sent to Vineyard Committee on Hunger at Box 1874, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Carla Giles Cuch flew to Salt Lake City on Tuesday to spend the holidays with her son, Cameron, his wife, Marilyn, and their son, Jay Ryder Cuch. Five-year-old Jay Ryder was recently photographed for the Pottery Barn holiday catalogs with a group of youngsters. Steve Levitt has been visiting with Donald Widdiss and Amanda Holmes for the past week, as well as with Gladys Widdiss and Carl Widdiss.

Christopher Manning surprised his family with a visit this week, having driven alone from Kentucky. While on the Vineyard, Chris enjoyed visiting with family and friends, drummed at the tribal building with fellow Black Brook drummers and celebrated his birthday at the home of his brother, Noah, and parents, Paul and Theresa. We look forward to his return in spring.

Kayla Manning returned home on Tuesday after attending the wedding of her brother, Kyle, in Missouri.

Happy 60th anniversary wishes to Walter and Nancy Delaney as they celebrate their special day on Dec. 23.

Steve Roth will observe his special day on Dec. 18. Ingy Farat Lew celebrates on Dec. 19. A very special happy birthday wish to my daughter in law, Theresa Manning, as she celebrates on Dec. 22. My former MVRHS classmate and Facebook buddy John Bunker will celebrate on Dec. 22. Gabi Vanderhoop will celebrate on Dec. 23.
