Hockey alumni games take place today at 5:30 p.m. (girls) and 6:45 p.m. (boys) at the arena. The high school gym hosts the basketball alumni games at 6 p.m. (girls) and 7:30 p.m. (boys).
Girls’ Basketball
The girls move to a 3-1 record after taking down Sandwich 67-59 at home on Saturday and defeating Nauset 70-43 on Tuesday.
The Sandwich win was the second Vineyard victory over the Blue Knights in less than a week. Trailing by five at the start of the second half, the girls took the lead on a Jennie Lindland layup in the third quarter and never relinquished it. The Vineyard defense, led by senior Hanna Persson, kept Sandwich’s two top scorers in check throughout. Lindland led the team in scoring with 26 points, going 12 for 17 from the free throw line (11 for 13 in the fourth quarter). Senior Maggie Riseborough scored 15 points, while junior Kendall Robinson had nine. Junior Katie Stewart, playing on a sore ankle, scored six points, providing key offensive support with her rebounds and assists.
On Tuesday, Nauset remained on the Vineyard’s heels until the fourth quarter, when Riseborough turned in 12 of her 23 total points to clinch the win. Senior Alex Mark scored 14 points, while Lindland had 11 points and Robinson turned in seven. Coach Lisa Stewart also praised the game play of senior Madison Hughes and juniors Alayna Hutchinson and Hailee McCarthy.
The girls play Norton at home at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Boys’ Basketball
The boys took down visiting Sandwich 70-49 on Saturday night and defeated Cape Cod Academy 54-43 to move them to a 3-0 record. The team plays Norton at home at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Girls’ Hockey
Senior captain Celia Mercier scored a hat trick and junior Emily Cimeno contributed three assists in the girls’ hard-fought 5-4 home victory over Quincy/North Quincy on Saturday. Mercier’s first goal came in the second period on a Cimeno assist, kicking off the girls’ rally from a shaky first period that landed them in a 3-0 hole. Ten seconds after Mercier’s score, junior Kassidy Bettencourt notched her first varsity goal on a Sydney Davies assist; Cimeno and freshman Olivia Ogden set up another Mercier goal not a minute later to even the score.
Freshman Aubrey Ashmun, with help from Cimeno, put the Vineyarders ahead 4-3 with six minutes remaining in the period. Quincy evened the score before the break, but the Vineyard held out through two power plays to end the period 4-4. Mercier scored her final goal two minutes into the third period, on assists from sophomore Emily Hammett and junior Tayla Kuehne. Junior goalie Texe Craig had 21 saves.
The girls fell 4-0 to a 4-0 Falmouth team on Wednesday, moving them to a 2-1 record on the season. They will next play Marshfield in a Wednesday away game.
Boys’ Hockey
The Vineyarders took down visiting Bourne 3-1 last Saturday, with senior Colby Gouldrup scoring twice and contributing an assist. Gouldrup’s first goal came in the first period, on assists from fellow seniors Tyler Araujo and Noah Stobie. Bourne evened the score in the second on a power play, but Gouldrup answered the challenge two minutes later on a Vineyard power play. Assists came from Tyler Araujo and sophomore Tyson Araujo. The Vineyarders again took advantage of the power play with 30 seconds to go in the second period, as Tyler Araujo scored on assists from senior Bobby Perry and Gouldrup.
The team is now 2-1, and takes on Whitman-Hanson today in an away game.
