Tonight’s Shabbat Service at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his friend and colleague Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.
Woollcott Smith will speak at the 5:30 p.m. service about his experience as a Freedom Rider during the civil rights movement. Additionally, those who participated in the civil rights movement in any way will have the opportunity to share their experiences. Rabbi Caryn Broitman leads the service.
Members of the Martha’s Vineyard community are invited to attend and participate in the service, which will include the singing of freedom songs from the civil rights movement and from the Jewish tradition. An Oneg Shabbat light dinner follows.
This is the 14th year that the Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of the NAACP and the Hebrew Center have co-sponsored the tribute to Dr. King and Rabbi Heschel. For information, contact Herb Foster at 508-627-7456 or herblf@comcast.net.
