The weather has been about the same but the sky has been sensational. The moon has been full and bright, and the sunsets have been spectacular. There was one sunset that was all over Facebook. It certainly was a beautiful sight.

Here I go again. I have to get the list of birthdays from the school located next door to my home. Want to bet how long it takes me to get over there and get the list?

Anyway, happy birthday to Fire Chief Peter Shemeth, who celebrated his day Jan. 10, and to Kathryn Bettencourt, who celebrated her day Jan. 11

Things have slowed down now that Christmas is over and people are headed south to their winter homes or are enjoying vacation.

Our sympathies go out to the John Mayhew family. Mr. Mayhew passed away Tuesday at the age of 91. He was a high school teacher for many years and I had the fortune to have him as my math teacher. As he entertained us he was teaching us and we almost didn’t know it. He had a great smile and a love for those around him. He will surely be missed by his family and those of us who had the honor to know him.

Congratulations to Conor Smith, whom Cong. Keating officially recognized as one of the two high school students he nominated to U.S. military academies. Riley Donegan from Vineyard Haven was the other student. Conor is the son of Sergeant Tom Smith and Allison Smith. Congratulations to both young men; we are very proud of you.

Laurie from the Council on Aging sent me an e-mail with information on a number of activities taking place this week.

First up, interested in a new way to exercise? Saskia Vanderhoop is leading a new salsa class on Friday, Jan. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $7 per class, and comes with a free salsa CD. Additional class dates are held Jan. 27, Feb. 2 and Feb. 10. No class will be held on Jan. 20 because there is a men’s breakfast at that time.

Also on Friday, Jan. 13 Nancy Lotz will present an armchair travel experience, The Holy Land, at 10 a.m. Among other fascinating places, you will visit Nabataea, the city of Petra and the four different quarters of Old Jerusalem and the Nile Valley. The program will take place every Friday this month at 10 a.m.

At noon on Fridays the Council of Aging hosts a Friday Café. Enjoy the best macaroni and cheese on the Island, plus plenty of other good food! Please call 24 hours in advance if you’d like to attend.

All questions about Council on Aging programs should be directed to 508-627-4368. Sign up is required for all classes and programs.

On Saturday, Jan. 14 Mary Jane Sorrentino, trained by the Gore Climate Change Project, will give a presentation about the causes of this global disaster and how it is affecting New England coastal areas. The presentation will take place at the Howes House in West Tisbury from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

It’s not too early to begin thinking about summer fun. For more than 40 years Felix Neck’s summer day camp has brought together children and nature on its 350-acre wildlife sanctuary. From paddling on the pond to searching for salamanders in the woods, the Felix Neck programs encourage campers to actively investigate their surroundings, make their own discoveries, appreciate nature and, most of all, have fun.

At Felix Neck campers will hike the trails, net at the ponds, monitor wildlife, play games, sing songs and much more. The sessions run from June 20 through August 31. Brochures and information are available on the Web site massaudubon.org/felixneck or by calling 508-627-4850.

Felix Neck camp registration is first come, first served and is accepted by phone, fax or mail. For more information e-mail felixneck@massaudubon.org

This is the weekend of the big game and many Islanders are traveling to Foxboro for the playoffs as the Patriots take on the Denver Broncos. It should be a great game and I hope all travel safe. GO PATS!!

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
