A one day snowstorm, plus one day of shoveling, plus one day of fog and 50-degree temperatures equals a week in New England. I must say that I was one of those people who loved the look of the snow and it finally felt like winter.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Kyle Fauteux, who celebrated her day Jan. 24.
Special wishes go out to Audrey Polleys, who will celebrate her day Jan. 29.
I have to say congratulations to my nephew Doug, and his wife, Lori Noble, on the birth of their first child. Sabrina Maureen came into the world on Jan. 25 at 11:28 p.m. Congratulations to all.
This has been a quiet week so I am looking for some town news. Please call or better yet e-mail me, I would love to share your news if you would like.
Congratulations to Brooke and Derek Avakian on moving into their new home. We went to their housewarming party and what a great job they did making it into a warm and welcoming home.
Griffin Hughes will teach her foam roller workshop at the Mansion House this Saturday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. The class will detail how the use of this simple tool can ease muscle and joint pain, increase blood flow, and massage connective tissue. “Foam Roller exercises have become incredibly popular, it’s like a self-massage that you can do anytime, anywhere,” Brenda Wallis, health club fitness director said. The one-and-a-half hour class is $20 for health club members, $35 for non-members, including a take-home foam roller. Participants can also bring their own rollers and take the class for only $10. Space is limited, make sure to register early! For more information, visit www.mvmansionhouse.com or call 508-693-2200.
The senior center has some great activities this next week. They are as follow:
• Holy Land and Egypt with Nancy Lotz, today, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m.
• Salsa dance class with Saskia Vanderhoop, also today from 9 to 10 a.m. Saskia says they had a great turn out on Jan. 13. Everyone had a great time! Cost is $7 per class.
• Sign up for Janice and Jeffery Wooden’s RV Adventure on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. Sign up by Monday at noon. Soup and bread will be served before the talk. Jeff and Janice had been planning an extended RV tour around North America for over 10 years. Their first big choice was deciding on the kind of recreational vehicle to buy. They’ll explain the myriad choices of types and sizes of RVs available. Then the couple had to decide how long to be on the road and a tentative route through Canada, US, and perhaps even Mexico.
They’ll discuss these decisions and how common life issues caused unexpected changes. The main discussion will revolve around their actual trip from August to November 2011, which covered 11,000 miles, and 30 states in 71 days. They’ll focus on their favorite attractions, people they met, experiences, and what they might do differently on their next adventure. And, of course, they’ll share a bit of their picture portfolio.
• Middle East with Iba Lent on Friday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. The talk will detail the Sunni-Shia split in Islam and its far-reaching consequences. It arose after Mohammed’s death from a struggle for the succession and from the murder of Mohammed’s two grandsons. This still affects the events of the Middle East today, in particular the tensions between Saudi Arabia, which follows an extreme Sunni current, and Iran, which is the main protagonist of the Shia tradition.
Brigitte (Iba) Lent retired to the Vineyard in 2003, after about 25 years of service with the language services of the State Department, dealing with a broad spectrum of subjects and events. Earlier she spent five years in Munich, Bavaria, and four-and-a-half years in Rome.
• Piano Fun with Adele Dreyer will be after lunch on Friday, Feb. 3. Adele will request your favorite songs to play after lunch.
It is a good thing we have two weeks to recover for the Super Bowl after the game last Sunday. It was a nail-biter till the end. So now we will hear about the showdown next Sunday.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
