The Vineyard may be known for its “dry” towns, but four of the six Island towns could be considered the “wettest” — at least by some standards. According to a list of 75 Massachusetts towns with the highest number of liquor licenses per capita, Oak Bluffs is the fifth wettest town in the commonwealth with just 128 residents per liquor license.
Edgartown follows in sixth place, with 130 residents per license, and Aquinnah in 10th place with 177 residents per license. Tisbury, which did not allow the sale of beer and wine until 2010, now comes in at number 34th in the state, with 345 residents per license.
The data, presented by TV station WCVB, may be skewed by low year-round populations in the tourist-centric Cape and Islands region. According to Cape Cod Today editor Walter Brooks, only three Cape towns are not listed among the 75 towns. Those towns are Bourne, Mashpee and Sandwich. Provincetown topped the rest of the state with one liquor license per every 54 residents.
